The inference

CASE-038 is TV Tropes, a community-curated catalogue of narrative tropes and their instances. A155 presents it as “the clearest large-scale empirical setting” for the structuralist side of the theory. If a structural measure predicts which instances the catalogue files under one trope, the catalogue confirms CLAIM-147: a trope is a family of observational profiles joined by admissible transformations around a core of preserved relations.

Critical questions

  • Would the evidence be expected if the hypothesis were false? Yes. The labels fit their examples by construction, whether or not the structural account is right.
  • Does it tell the hypothesis apart from its rivals? No. The rival is editorial agreement: the catalogue’s own process of fitting descriptions to examples.
  • Does the measure measure what it is said to? No, and this is the question that fails. CLAIM-145: “Editors write a trope’s description from its examples, and then add examples that fit the description. A measure that predicts those labels predicts editorial agreement. So agreement with the catalogue cannot by itself validate CLAIM-147’s structural account.” CLAIM-145 calls it CLAIM-011’s point carried to labels: “a criterion fitted on the data it is checked against certifies nothing”. THEORY-167’s promote_when gives the same warning for Propp: analyses of single tales that fit the scheme cannot settle it, since the scheme was built to fit such tales.

Verdict

Rejected, for labels used as the test. The exchange saw it. A155 §5 asks for “a small, independently validated set of tropes” and evaluation “on held-out trope families”. A178’s Study B: “Control for circularity by selecting trope definitions and structural anchors independently of the models being evaluated”, and its Ch12.9 is “Controlling circularity and label leakage”. That is CLAIM-011’s remedy, and an argument from such a held-out set would be a different premise. A218’s Study 5 drops the control. TV Tropes stays useful for candidates to test.

CLAIM-011 is cited here and not listed as a premise: it is the principle the failing question applies, not a step of the inference.
