The claim
Two halves. Since 2026-10-28 the claim is the first; the second is ARG-014, Rejected, and is kept below as the text that moved.
Prior art. Propp found that in the wondertales he analysed “the constant elements are 31 functions of characters”, and that the tales “differ in who performs the functions and how” (THEORY-1164, from LIT-828; LIT-830 is the English translation). That is A155’s “recasting”: the same relational pattern with different characters or setting. Propp also names inversions and swaps. CLAIM-019 holds Lévi-Strauss’s transformational analysis, “as it has been modelled computationally” (LIT-804, LIT-807), as direct prior art for structural transport. A155’s table of transformations (recasting, inversion, subversion, deconstruction, parody) is its descendant. A155 names neither. No reply from U44 on cites Propp, and none connects Lévi-Strauss to the tropes, though A102 had named Propp’s Morphology among the sources and A178 §3.1 keeps Lévi-Strauss as motivation for the relational account.
Circularity. THEORY-167’s promote_when carries the warning that
applies here: further analyses of single tales that fit the scheme cannot
settle it, since the scheme was built to fit such tales. TV Tropes is a
community version of the same situation. Editors write a trope’s
description from its examples, and then add examples that fit the
description. A measure that predicts those labels predicts editorial
agreement. So agreement with the catalogue cannot by itself validate
CLAIM-147’s structural account. This is CLAIM-011’s point carried to
labels: a criterion fitted on the data it is checked against certifies
nothing.
Partly answered
The exchange saw the circularity half. A155 §5 asks for “a small, independently validated set of tropes” and evaluation “on held-out trope families”. A178’s Study B: “Control for circularity by selecting trope definitions and structural anchors independently of the models being evaluated”, and its Ch12.9 is “Controlling circularity and label leakage”. That is CLAIM-011’s remedy, and it meets the second half if it is carried out. A218’s Study 5 drops the control. The prior-art half is not answered anywhere in the exchange.
What it does not say
- It does not say TV Tropes is useless as data. It gives candidates for testing, not validation.
- It does not say a structural account of tropes is false.
- It says the manuscript would have to cite Propp and Lévi-Strauss as precursors, and that labels written to fit their examples cannot be the test. It is QUESTION-005 applied to one corpus.
Note of 2026-10-28: split under ADR-061
The claim had “Two halves”. The circularity half is a verdict on support: a measure that predicts trope labels predicts editorial agreement, so the labels cannot validate CLAIM-147. It is now ARG-014, from CASE-038 to CLAIM-147, Rejected, with CLAIM-011’s point and A178’s control in its body. This claim keeps the prior-art half, which says CLAIM-147’s account is not new, not that it is false. So it no longer objects to CLAIM-147, and it does not undercut the argument.
