The claim
U37 read enshittification (THEORY-150) as evidence that corporate “organisms” are different kinds of things from humans. U39: “the reverse is also true … an organism with an auto-immune disease, or cancer”. The assistant’s version (A135): “Constitutive dependence does not entail alignment of interests.” Sen’s distinction between institutional outcomes and substantive opportunities (THEORY-025) was added later.
Why it is not in the paper
Credence and inclusion differ: the record believes it, and the paper defers relations among scales (Section 7.9). The owner’s stronger U37 claim — that corporations are “substantively different kinds of things” — was narrowed to motivational alienness in the drafts without the narrowing being recorded; this entry holds the narrow version and names the strong one.
Note of 2026-10-12: evidence now linked
Two THEORYs now ground this claim’s converse, that constitutive dependence does not entail alignment of interests. THEORY-135: cancer-like cheating is found across the independent origins of complex multicellularity. THEORY-141: a collective is stable only if selection between collectives comes to trump selection among its units, through mechanisms such as policing.
Note of 2026-10-18: the cost-shifting cell, two blocked inferences, a formal analogue
A29 of the exchange of 2026-10-17 crossed whole-level with constituent-level regulatory burden and named the cell this claim predicts: “Stable whole that shifts costs onto members”. “An institution can remain stable because its members absorb the regulatory burden through overwork, reduced autonomy, or sacrificed opportunities.” It blocked both directions of inference: “The organization is distressed, therefore its members are suffering”, and “Its members are suffering, therefore the organization is functionally distressed”. “Neither follows.” A28 had said the same of a corporation: it “might satisfy a functional criterion for distress without being a suffering subject. Meanwhile, its individual members may genuinely suffer”.
A33 gave a formal analogue in training. Two task gradients that cancel give a zero aggregate gradient, and “the individual tasks remain unsatisfied”: “Zero aggregate gradient does not imply absence of frustrated demands.” The whole’s measure shows no burden while each constituent demand is unmet. That is CLAIM-351. A33’s own caution: “the analogy must not be taken as a claim that learning objectives have interests or rights.”
Note of 2026-10-27: the edge says what the claim uses
The status review of this date (ADR-057, ADR-058) moved its four readings from grounds to corroborated_by. Each supplies an instance of the non-entailment (a platform profiting by abusing its users, cancer-like cheating, defectors undoing a collective, outcomes against opportunities), and the claim uses none of their general theses. CASE-172 (Active, documented) moves from illustrated_by to grounds, because its success described at one level and losses borne by the programs is the forward direction documented.
