The claim

The owner, at U20, after CLAIM-471’s first sentence: “and coupling inertial frames necessarily induces scale separation (way less confident about this one than the former assertion).”

Read with CLAIM-471’s restatement, it says: when locally described systems are coupled, some modes of the whole (the collective ones) come to evolve on a time scale well separated from others (the relative ones).

Why it is Rejected

The necessity fails, and every reply that took it up said so.

  • A20 §3: “the strength of the result comes from the specific dynamics, not from coupling alone.”
  • A21 §3: “Does coupling split the system into distinct normal modes? Often, yes. Does it create a hierarchy in which relative modes rapidly disappear while collective modes persist? Only under additional dynamical conditions.”
  • A23 §V.3: “This was the least secure part of your initial conjecture, and it remains conditional.”

CLAIM-481 is the counterexample, with the condition under which the claim does hold.

The status is set on filing because the defeater is a computation, not because the owner’s question is closed. What remains open is which couplings separate time scales and why. That is CLAIM-478’s second half, that organization makes separations, and CLAIM-481’s condition is a mechanism for it.

What survived

A23 §V.3: “Interconnection can produce a hierarchy of collective and relative modes. Dissipation, spectral separation, stability, and the relevant observation horizon determine whether this hierarchy supports an effective higher-level description.” A22 §2 added a route the owner’s sentence points toward: in a chain of n locally coupled units the slowest relaxation time grows as n². “By linking many components, it can create new long-wavelength modes that evolve much more slowly than local disturbances.” That is size, not coupling strength, making the separation. A23 also listed sources of separation that involve no coupling at all: conservation laws, metastability, critical slowing and imposed time scales.

Note of 2026-10-27 (evening): the readings of the U15–U23 works

Spivak (NOTE-1225; THEORY-1054) supplies a family of counterexamples beside CLAIM-481’s. Every harmonic network under his phase-space semantics is coupled and its step is symplectic (Prop. 6.6.1), so relative modes never decay. The status stands.
