Key takeaways

  • Assume isolated systems have objective physical states and independently prepared systems have independent physical states (preparation independence). Then distinct pure quantum states must correspond to non-overlapping distributions over physical states, so ψ-epistemic models in Harrigan–Spekkens’ sense cannot reproduce quantum predictions.

Seeded from the abstract and a skim, before the reading in NOTE-030. What follows is what the work says about itself.

Physicists have never agreed on what a quantum state represents: reality directly, or only knowledge about some underlying reality. The authors prove that any model in which the state is merely information about a system’s physical state, and in which independently prepared systems have independent physical states, makes predictions that contradict quantum theory.

Standing in the record

Filed from the survey of 2026-09-25 of work the anthology set aside as out of scope (tier C): 310 seconds of active reading over 2 sessions in the papers-feed tracker. It was filed Deferred, unread. NOTE-030 is the close reading of 2026-09-25, and it placed the work: Active — the founding ψ-ontology theorem. It is short, fully proved (App. A–B), and still the reference that every later ψ-epistemic/ψ-ontic argument, including LIT-007 §I.C and LIT-090, positions itself against. Read it with its assumption (b)–(c) in view, since that is where every response pushes.

When seeded, before the reading in NOTE-030, the entry gave a priority for a deeper reading: low — The paper is short and the skim covers the whole argument, including the appendix construction. It is load-bearing as a citation rather than as something to re-read (t=310, n=2).

What the seeding asked a deeper reading to check (NOTE-030 is that reading):

  • It is the foundational reference for the cluster: c16 (Spekkens’ toy theory is ψ-epistemic by construction), c19 (which argues PBR rules out only overlap, not epistemic readings in general) and c15 (Barandes’ demotion of ψ to a mathematical tool) all position themselves against it.
  • The load-bearing assumption is preparation independence, which is where the critics push. A deeper read should pair it with Leifer’s review and with the Lewis–Jennings–Barrett–Rudolph counter-model.

Access when seeded: arXiv abs page (v1 14 Nov 2011, v2 7 May 2012, v3 18 Nov 2012, “closely approximates journal version”) and full PDF of v3 (5+3 pp.) read in full, including Appendix A. Crossref confirms Nature Physics 8(6):475–478, online 2012-05-06. I did not read the typeset Nature Physics version.
