Wacquant, L. (2016). A concise genealogy and anatomy of habitus. The Sociological Review, 64(1), 64–72. doi:10.1111/1467-954x.12356.
Read in full on 2026-10-22 (NOTE-1074). The summary holds: the four “misunderstandings” it clears are that habitus replicates one structure, is coherent, explains only reproduction, and generates action by itself (pp. 68–69).
Why this is here
The replies treated habitus, as Wacquant clarifies it, as the existing account closest to a perspective carried by a person, and A40 quoted his point that dispositions can be multilayered and contradictory. Bears on CLAIM-417 and CASE-130.
From the reading, 2026-10-22. A40’s point is in the text: habitus is “multilayered” and can be “divided against themselves” (pp. 68–69). Two cautions, set out in NOTE-1074. CLAIM-417 cites this essay together with Swidler (LIT-1367) for a perspective’s dispositional repertoire, but Swidler denies that culture works through dispositions implanted by socialization, which is what habitus is. And CASE-130’s “different affordances” is supported only in general: the essay names the boxing gym as a site of secondary habitus and does not use the word or discuss martial arts. It also bears on CLAIM-417’s defeater, since habitus as stated here already separates layered dispositions from the positions that trigger them.
