Why this is here

The triage of 2026-10-29 filed it for four entries. QUESTION-083’s note of 2026-10-18 recommends reading Chesson before any negative-frequency-dependence criterion there is given stronger standing, and Chesson’s review (LIT-1219) is Unavailable. QUESTION-132’s first outcome, stabilizing coexistence, is named for Chesson. CLAIM-279’s note brings in his stabilizing and equalizing mechanisms. CASE-118 calls ρ, the inner product of two unit feature vectors, the components’ overlap, and finds an invasion growth of 1 − ρ. This paper defines niche overlap for MacArthur’s model, which is CLAIM-369’s model class, so it is the primary source against which CASE-118’s ρ should be checked.

What the record can already say, from Letten, Ke and Fukami (LIT-1237, NOTE-1377), who follow this paper: in Lotka–Volterra form Chesson’s niche overlap is ρ = √(α₁₂α₂₁/α₁₁α₂₂). For CASE-118’s matrix [[1, ρ], [ρ, 1]] that is ρ itself, so 1 − ρ is Chesson’s niche difference, not his overlap. Whether this paper’s overlap for MacArthur’s model is the cosine of the components’ feature vectors, as CASE-118 assumes, is what a reading would settle.
