Key takeaways
From the reading, NOTE-824.
- The objective. For a “symmetric (not necessarily positive definite) kernel” and ⟨f, g⟩ = E_p[fg], the top-N eigenspace of K maximizes Tr(E[uuᵀ]⁻¹ E[k(x,x′)u(x)u(x′)ᵀ]), equivalently Tr(Π) with Σ = I (Eqs. 6–7). This is Edelman et al.’s matrix result carried to function spaces by analogy. It fixes only the span.
- Ordering. Masking the gradient of each Λ_ii = (L⁻¹ΠL⁻ᵀ)_ii to its own output, and reading off v = L⁻¹u, is claimed to give ordered eigenfunctions. The authors say the argument is “not meant as mathematically rigorous proofs” (App. A.2).
- Bias. The gradient is nonlinear in Σ, so minibatch estimates are biased; moving averages of Σ and its Jacobian make training a two-timescale bilevel problem. The Jacobian costs about N² backward passes per step.
- SFA. With the graph-Laplacian kernel on adjacent frames, the objective is Slow Feature Analysis (Eq. 8, after Sprekeler 2011).
- Evidence. The 2-D hydrogen atom’s eigenvalues are recovered with the bias correction and missed without it. The video and Atari features are judged by eye.
- Symmetry. It is a precondition on k. The SFA kernel is symmetric by the form (u(x) − u(x′))(u(x) − u(x′))ᵀ, and the remark that reversible dynamics make the transition operator symmetric (§5.2) is an aside.
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-09-26 while pursuing, at the owner’s request, the connection Riesz, reproducing kernels and spectral representation learning (see the curation entry of that date). Read in full on 2026-10-14 in NOTE-824, which supersedes the seeded skim NOTE-231.
THEORY-007 and THEORY-009 cite it. The reading reports two overstatements. THEORY-007 says SpIN “learn the same objects directly”, but applying it to the positive-pair density ratio is the record’s step; the paper never mentions positive pairs. THEORY-009’s summary counts its symmetry as that of a positive-pair distribution, where it is a precondition placed on the kernel. No THEORY was filed: the paper’s mathematical content is Edelman et al.’s and Sprekeler’s, and its own contribution is a training algorithm. What it does with a non-symmetric kernel, the question the seed asked, the paper does not say. Johnson et al. (LIT-258, App. E.2) name it as one way to extract the eigenfunctions of K⁺, and Balestriero and LeCun (LIT-228) name it as “a perhaps more direct connection”.
Tagged anthology-candidate (ADR-005): the method is a training
procedure, which is the anthology’s subject. It is kept here by the
owner’s decision of 2026-09-26 that new work stays in nucleation until a
transfer is judged appropriate (ADR-010).
