Why it is a question

A7 §14, “Endorsement identifiability”: “Inferring trust or endorsement from observed causal facilitation may conflate authorization, incidental coupling, and common-cause effects.” A8 §7: “Pixel-placement data can reveal behavioral coordination, but they cannot by themselves tell us whether one participant endorsed another, followed an instruction, shared an intention, or independently converged on the same action … Without that extra information, endorsement remains a latent explanatory hypothesis, not an observed variable.”

TERM-053 defines endorsement counterfactually, as the effect of one process’s intervention on another’s share of influence. That makes it an interventional quantity. The question is whether observation can reach it.

It refines QUESTION-063, which asks what measurement tells a shared external drive from coupling or from different internal routes. Endorsement adds a fourth candidate, authorization, which is a kind of coupling that runs through the allocation of influence. On r/place a shared template is a common cause, and following it is authorization. The placements are the same either way. Litherland and Mørch 2021 (LIT-1037) read the planning forums beside the placement record. In their terms “instruction” is Reddit’s own rules, and the planners’ design images fall under “emergence”. They found the content decided off the canvas and carried out by placers who mostly never joined the discussion. So the placement record shows the outcome of coordination and not who directed it (THEORY-218), which answers this question in part, for this case: the coordination record was needed. An answer names the data or intervention that separates the cases.
