Contribution

The one study of r/place that reads the coordination record beside the placement record. For the Mona Lisa region of the 2017 canvas it combines counts of tiles placed per hour, a social network analysis of the r/monalisaclan forum, and interaction analysis of three forum threads. One author took part as a participant observer. It proposes a three-level framework (user action, meaning, structure) in which a visual artifact (the image) and a social artifact (the forum) evolve together, and it treats emergence as a bottom-up control mechanism comparable with top-down rules.

Key insight

The image on the canvas is the slow, visible trace of a design that lives in the forum. Decisions about what the image includes are made in discussion, often by a few central members, and carried out pixel by pixel by people who mostly never post. “The decision of what to add or replace was (for the most part) made at the group interaction (meaning) level, whereas actions were carried out on the user action level”. What counts as vandalism and what counts as a welcome addition is settled there too.

Assumptions

  • “Instruction” means the platform’s rules. The rules are Reddit’s four stated rules plus the technical restriction (one tile, then a five- to twenty-minute wait). They are “top down” and set by the developers. Forum blueprints are not instruction in this sense. In the framework they are emergent “visual patterns”.
  • Levels and time scales (Table 1). User action (minutes), meaning (hours, small groups), structure (days, all participants). The higher level changes more slowly and “controls the rate of growth of the lower”, after Mead’s account of emergence.
  • Case selection. One English-language, publicly recognizable artwork, chosen by Kozinets’ criteria from more than 1,500 objects made by more than 800 communities.
  • Influence is interpreted. The authors say the computed values (tiles per user, weighted degree) are tool outputs, while influence and emergence are the researchers’ interpretations.

Key results

  • Scale mismatch. In the Mona Lisa rectangle, “A total of 76,774 distinct users placed a total 243,103 tiles in this region.” The forum sample has “161 unique users and 361 comments on 72 posts”. Accounts are not people: “Reddit allows people to own an unlimited number of accounts”.
  • Phases (Table 2). Pre-image (8.5% of tiles), construction (36.3%), refinement (29.5%), and maintenance, in which “no new visual objects were added or removed” (25.8%). Tiles per user were about 1.5, then roughly 3.
  • Late planning. The image appeared around hour 23 from “a single user’s suggestion that included a simplified, visual model”. The forum opened at about hour 23, after the image was already recognizable.
  • Recruitment by the image itself. A central member proposed writing the forum’s URL on the canvas, with a link “Use this as a guide”. Within two hours newcomers reported arriving because of the tag.
  • Negotiation with neighbours. A Swiss-flag representative: “Respect our neutrality and we will help you build your Mona Lisa.” A central member accepted within 40 minutes and linked a revised design that included the flag. A Rainbow Road member proposed a frame that took in their rainbow, and r/trees objected to losing its pineapple and leaf. The frame overwrote them, and they later reappeared over the frame.
  • Central members gate proposals. “the high (weight > 20) WAD users had the power to allow and/or stop suggestions from being acted” on. But “the causal relationship between WAD or power and user action remains unclear”. One low-activity visitor (user 341) drew many replies.
  • Diplomats, not merged forums. “we did not find any discussion forums that were mutually integrated, where members of two or more communities were working together on equal terms.” Communities were linked by visiting representatives.
  • Survival. “once a visual object was recognizable, it had a better chance of survival”. Recognizability “attracted both supporters and challengers”. In negotiations, “If the conversation was conflict-oriented, it could be deleted, especially when the stakeholder was a smaller community.”
  • Quantitative limits. “quantitative methods cannot identify whether the visual images were the result of collaboration or conflict, or whether the participants in the discussion forums cooperated or disagreed.” A Swiss-flag member offered to help build the Mona Lisa, so “community affiliation cannot be identified with quantitative measures alone”, against Rappaz et al.’s equation of activity with belonging.
  • Elsewhere on the canvas. Similar “integrated, skewed artwork” appears in other regions (Belgian and German flags with beer and sausage; a neutral EU zone with a dove between France and Germany) (Fig. 4).

Concepts

  • Visual artifact / social artifact. The image on the canvas; the forum discussion about it.
  • Instruction (rules). Reddit’s stated rules and the tile restriction, set by the developers. Not plans or templates.
  • Visual pattern (blueprint). A linked design image in the forum, the “kind of visual model or overall design”, changing more slowly than placements.
  • Integrated, skewed artwork. An image distorted by extraneous objects it has absorbed, carrying a URL tag to its forum.
  • Creative destruction. An inserted object prompting local work to restore or update the design.
  • WAD. Weighted all-degree centrality in the forum reply network, a researcher’s measure not visible to users.

Connections

It builds on Simon’s evolving artifacts and stable intermediate forms, Fischer & Ostwald’s seeding–growth–reseeding model, Mead on emergence and the generalized other, and Stahl on group meaning-making. It cites Rappaz et al. (2018) for the canvas-level statistics and disputes their reading of activity as affiliation. Adams et al. (LIT-1034) and Wu & Silva (LIT-1032) cite it.

Bearing on the record

What the filing and the record expected. The filing, and the record’s mentions of this paper (CASE-079, CLAIM-272, QUESTION-084), read “instruction” as plans and instructions issued by planners. In the paper, “instruction” is Reddit’s rules, and the planners’ blueprints are part of “emergence”. The material the record wants is there, in Extracts 1–3, but under the other heading.

CLAIM-272 (equal budgets, unequal influence). The closest evidence the record has. In one region about 77,000 accounts placed tiles, while a forum of 161 decided what the image would be. A handful of central members accepted or refused additions. A single proposer’s sketch started the image, and a single member’s guide placed the recruitment tag. The qualifications:

  • the authors say the causal link from forum power to placements is unclear;
  • the forum opened after the image was already recognizable, so the initial design was not a template followed by thousands;
  • it is one artwork. So it shows the mechanism the claim names, plans directing others’ actions, in operation, without measuring how much influence it carried.

QUESTION-084 (endorsement from behaviour). On the question’s second horn. The authors argue that placement data “cannot identify whether the visual images were the result of collaboration or conflict”, and show one case of affiliation that behaviour would misread. Their method, reading the forum beside the canvas, is the “record of the coordination itself” the question names. It is an argument with one counterexample, not a test of any inference method.

CLAIM-279 (stabilizing is relative to a frame). Direct support from the field: “The boundary between creative evolution and vandalism was not clear but a tradeoff to be negotiated”, and whether an object was kept or deleted depended on the negotiation and the stakeholder’s size. The same Swiss flag would have been damage to the original design and became part of the image once the blueprint absorbed it.

CLAIM-280 (product and producer). Two observations. A quarter of the region’s tiles went to maintenance with no new objects, which is persistence by continued work. And the product changed its design while the forum persisted, absorbing the flag, the rainbow and the frame; the r/trees objects were erased and came back. The product’s identity was renegotiated by its producer. The paper does not follow turnover of placers or forum members.

CLAIM-086 (constitutive influence). The gatekeeping in Extracts 1 and 3 is influence over what the image is, and so over which placements count as repair and which as damage. That is the form CLAIM-086’s 2026-10-13 note gives the template designer. It is an illustration of that note, not new support for CLAIM-086’s institutional thesis.

QUESTION-093. The Mona Lisa Clan regulates its own image’s boundary by negotiation, sets its own design and recruits through its own product. That bears on self-individuation and closure for a coalition, but the paper makes no such argument.

Limitations

  • One artwork, three threads, and a forum of 161 accounts beside 76,774 placers. Most placers’ relation to the plan is unknown.
  • WAD is a researcher’s construct and was invisible to participants; that it tracks decision power is the authors’ reading of the excerpts.
  • The forum was sampled by top posts and three comment levels, without bots and deleted users.
  • No timing analysis links forum decisions to placement changes beyond the snapshots chosen.
  • The instruction-versus-emergence framework is interpretive and not tested against an alternative.

Open questions

  • Across many artworks, do placement patterns change, after a lag, when the forum’s blueprint changes? That would turn C1 and C2 into measurements and answer QUESTION-084 for this case.
  • Is the planning core a stable set of accounts while the placers turn over? That is the producer half of CLAIM-280.
