The claim

A8 §4 separated a construction regime, in which the local structure keeps changing, from a maintenance regime with “Low net visual change despite continued editing and repair”. “The maintenance regime is conceptually interesting because apparent stability may require continuous activity. An artwork can persist not because nothing happens to it, but because destructive interventions are continually counteracted by restorative interventions.” Its proposed measure is a conditional repair hazard: the rate of restoring edits at a site just after an overwrite, compared with the baseline rate there.

A8 §9: “A collectively maintained pattern can possess coherence, persistence, and recognizable identity even though none of its constituents continuously controls the pattern, all of its constituents are replaceable, and some of their activities oppose one another.” And: “the distinction between a persistent product and a persistent producer. An image can endure without an enduring organization behind it, while an organization can endure despite radically changing the image it produces.”

The record already holds persistence through turnover, at the level of organizations. Open Horizon (CASE-006) persists through turnover while losing its founding intentions. What this claim adds is the split between the thing maintained and the maintainer, with a case that shows both (CASE-079). The pixel record makes the product observable directly. The producer has to be inferred.

A8 drew the moral for selves: “a stable self may be maintained by continuous internal contestation and repair, rather than by an absence of conflict.” And: “this distinguishes persistence of self-representation from persistence of the processes that construct and govern that representation.”

What it does not say

  • It does not say an artwork or its coalition is a self or an agent. A8: “an artwork is not thereby a self, and an artwork-maintaining coalition does not automatically satisfy the conditions for agency.”
  • It does not supply a persistence criterion for selves. CLAIM-161 asks for a coherence measure conserved along a system’s own trajectory, and QUESTION-043 asks which one. A10 §4.3’s “causal-organizational continuity” is a candidate of the same shape, and it is not filed.
  • No repair-hazard analysis of the released 2022 data has been done here. The case’s “documented” standing covers the event and the data, not the regime.
