The claim

A6 §7: “An identity-like organization could then emerge as a self-maintaining pattern of recurrent causal activity and mutually reinforced authority. That need not imply the organization is continuously active. A dormant coalition can remain available for reactivation because learned parameters, memory traces, and endorsement structures persist.” It separated:

  • activation continuity, whether a process is running;
  • organizational continuity, whether its causal structure can be reinstated;
  • policy continuity, whether reinstated activity keeps its characteristic preferences.

“A self might remain organizationally stable despite considerable fluctuations in activation and momentary policy. Conversely, a system could remain highly active while undergoing profound changes in its identity-defining organization.”

A10 §4.3 took the next step: “a completely independent duplicate might behave identically without being numerically the same persisting self”, so identity goes by “causal-organizational continuity”, a relation of historical descent. “This is not automatically an equivalence relation. Organizational histories can branch, merge, and partially overlap … recursion permits cases analogous to fission, fusion, gradual replacement, and distributed continuity.”

The record’s persistence claim is CLAIM-161: a self persists when a coherence measure is conserved along its own trajectory. This claim qualifies it. Along a trajectory with a gap, what is conserved is the capacity to reinstate an organization, not any running quantity. It bears on QUESTION-043, by saying what kind of thing the conserved measure must be. CLAIM-280 is the same distinction for collectives: the product persists, and so may the producer.

What it does not say

  • It is not a theory of personal identity. Branching shows it is not one.
  • It does not say any reinstatement counts. A10’s duplicate is excluded by requiring descent.

Note of 2026-10-18: a relation between episodes, and branching restated

A3 of the exchange of 2026-10-17: “Dynamical separation and endogenous maintenance are properties of processes. Historical continuity is a relation between processes at different times.” A4’s revised candidate: “Historical continuity is a relation between organizational episodes, not simply another dynamical property of an episode”, and “causal transmission alone does not settle whether A and B are numerically the same collective.” Neither cited this claim. Arm C of CASE-116 is its dormant coalition as a construction: a rule passed through an archive between two episodes that never run together, where intervening on the earlier rule changes the later behaviour.

A24’s Proposition 3 restated this claim’s second half: “Construct an organizational configuration capable of producing two successors, each preserving specified organizational features of the predecessor”, so “This relation cannot alone be numerical identity, because numerical identity cannot branch.” A24: “This makes CLAIM-287 precise without requiring an entire metaphysics of personal identity.” It did not cite THEORY-447, Parfit’s branching argument, which the claim parallels, and it only sketches the construction. Nothing new to the claim beyond arm C.
