Definition
“Persistence” of an organization in this record means one of the following, and a claim should say which.
- State. A collective variable changes slowly (CLAIM-329). Slowness is a mark of a level, not its definition (CLAIM-331). CASE-116’s slow flip register, which no member reads, has it and nothing else.
- Dynamical. Characteristic responses continue (CLAIM-329).
- Historical. The organization that produces the collective is causally transmitted across successive populations of members (CLAIM-329, QUESTION-118). CASE-116’s rule passed through an archive has it without the others.
- Viable. Trajectories that keep satisfying a constraint set remain available. It is a question about a constraint set fixed independently of the dynamics (THEORY-134), and stability does not entail it (CLAIM-079).
- Reinstatable. The capacity to reinstate an organization after inactivity, not its continuous running (CLAIM-287). It can branch, and so is not identity.
Neighbours, kept apart: member regeneration, members reading and rewriting the collective variable (CLAIM-327; CASE-116’s second system), and being reproduced as against reproducing (THEORY-465).
Where the exchange of 2026-10-20 had them. A10 §10: “individuality may require more than one kind of continuity”, with structural, generative, viability, interventional and historical continuity, none citing CLAIM-329. A12 proposed “individuality, and which continuity”, “a disambiguation of structural persistence, generative maintenance, viability, reproductive continuity, and historical identity”. A13 and A14 proposed “organizational reconstitution”, “the renewal, repair, replacement, or transformation of relations sustaining an organization across constituent or environmental change”, and the name recurs in A15, A16, A21–A23, A25 and A26.
What it is not
- Not “reconstitution” as a name. The record uses the word on both sides of the line this term must keep. CLAIM-329’s historical persistence has the producing processes “transmitted and reconstituted” across populations. But “independent reconstitution”, an organization of the same kind arising independently, is what QUESTION-118, THEORY-418 and CASE-105 hold is not continuation. A name that covers “restores, reproduces, or transforms” (A13) would merge the two, so A13’s “organizational reconstitution” is not adopted here. A claim about maintenance through turnover says which of senses 2, 3 and 5 it means.
- Not one property with several aspects. The senses dissociate (CASE-116: slowness without transmission, transmission without co-running).
- Not TERM-045’s sense 3 (“persisting” self), which is sameness over time of a self. This is persistence of an organization, of any kind.
- Not a criterion of individuality. QUESTION-086 and QUESTION-093 stay open. A14: “A boundary that performs well for one target must not automatically be described as the individual’s true physical boundary.”
