Griesemer & Shavit (2023), LIT-188 (Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B 378, 20210398), read in full in NOTE-173 from the Europe PMC XML. Section numbers stand in for pages.
What was actually shown
Nothing was shown in the experimental sense; “No data were reported”. The paper states an idealized sequence and argues for parts of it informally.
The 3Cs (§1, Table 1).
- Coordination in a collection: ordering in space and time among co-located members; contributions “mainly ‘aggregative’”.
- Cooperation in a conexus: a web of binary interactions without a required shared goal. Benefit can still be booked per member: “the currency of cooperative interaction is the same as for individual action” (the lions’ meat per lion).
- Collaboration in a community: heterogeneous multi-way interactions for a shared goal. Group benefit “cannot even be recognized as group benefits without reference to the special interactions engendered by the group”, and “reliability is thus an emergent community property”.
Table 1 draws “Transition to a new level-of-individuality perspective” between Stage 2 and Stage 3 only. Collections and conexuses are collectives but not individuals.
The mechanism (§2). Generative entrenchment (after Wimsatt): core interactions come to be ones “later-evolved interactions will depend on for their existence and character, so that perturbations of it will tend to be catastrophic”. The transition is “highly contingent, even if contingently irreversible”. A conexus may instead dissolve back to coordination or persist, unstable, on external scaffolding.
Closure and reproduction (§3). Community needs organizational closure (Moreno & Mossio, adopted not argued), “Hence, community constitutes a new level of individuality.” Following Caporael, it “must be exported as an organized generative package larger than a single individual member”. The Neolithic thought experiment is conditional: a migrant group “might require” one of each occupation and the ongoing interaction types.
What could have come out otherwise. As stated, nothing yet: there are no criteria by which an actual group could fail to be a community. That is why the account is Proposed.
What this does not say
- That transitions are described without circularity. That claim is in the abstract only. The among-members against within-members criterion it names is used once, to describe the transition (§2), and never as a test. Stage 3’s shared goal (§1), and §3’s “focal goal of every participating member” and “cognition about the group itself”, presuppose the group (NOTE-173, corrections).
- That individuality is a special case of collectivity, with explanatory benefits. Abstract only. The body gives a graded scale of collectivity and no argument for the benefit.
- That real transitions follow the sequence. It is “one possible pathway”, like an embryologist’s normal table. It fits “egalitarian” transitions better than “fraternal” ones, which may run in reverse; the paper’s own discipline-formation example is a reverse case.
- That inheritance and individuality arise together. §3’s “seem likely to evolve in tandem” is hedged, and §2 allows a new level of reproduction “but not yet of a transition in inheritance system”.
- That it applies to all life histories. That is a stated hope. Only human cases are discussed, and hominid evolution, named in the abstract, is not.
- That Bourrat’s account is wrong. The paper endorses his scaffolding and endogenization view and adds community reliability as a “missing ingredient”, deferring the model to future work.
Connections
- QUESTION-035 asks when a combined form is one system, relative to a target. Entrenchment plus closure is a candidate criterion of the kind it wants, but the question asks for one that returns a verdict that can be wrong, and this sketch has no measurement. It is not linked as an answer.
- QUESTION-093 asks whether organizational closure is needed before a coalition is a higher-level agent. This account makes closure the mark of a new individual, not of an agent, so it does not answer that either.
- Levin’s nested agents (THEORY-583) also put a shared goal at the centre of a higher-level whole, but for Levin any set of parts that pursue a goal together is already a larger agent. This sketch asks more: collaboration rather than coordination, entrenchment and closure, and what it yields is an individual, not an agent.
- QUESTION-118 asks what must be transmitted for a collective to persist through the replacement of all its members. This sketch’s claim that such a community is reproduced only by exporting an organized sample of its roles and interactions bears on it, though it concerns reproduction, not persistence, and gives no criterion separating continuation from reconstitution.
- THEORY-071 makes individuality a necessary but insufficient condition of minimal agency; THEORY-232 compares a whole’s agency with its parts’. Both start where this account ends, from an individual already given.
- Bourrat’s individuality papers, LIT-157, LIT-049 and LIT-005, are the stated rival emphasis: Darwinian properties plus individualizing mechanisms, against community reliability and heterogeneity of interactions. Nothing here refutes them.
- The SEP entries on biological individuals (LIT-168) and on units and levels of selection (LIT-160) are the broader map. O’Malley and Parke (LIT-210, NOTE-159) report that eukaryogenesis may not have been a transition in individuality at all.
Note of 2026-10-30: the proposal split off
What Griesemer and Shavit propose, as distinct from whether it is right, is now THEORY-1247, Active, and this entry extends it (ADR-065 §3). The phrase “on this sketch” in this title asserts the account, as “as X proposes” would. So this entry keeps the question whether the account holds, and its promote_when. The entries that test it (CASE-171, QUESTION-277) cite this one.
Note of 2026-10-30: what holds it back
The record has no operational criteria that sort real groups into collection, conexus and community. Nor does it have a worked case showing the new level of individuality at the conexus–community step, with benefit that cannot be booked per member and a knockout effect. NOTE-173 found none in the paper: “No data were reported”. CASE-171 and QUESTION-277 name the mealybug patchwork as a place to test it, and its reports are unread.
