Wu, Y., & Silva, A. (2024). How Millions Coordinate at Scale: Engagement, Collaboration, and Conflict in Three Editions of Reddit r/place. arXiv:2408.13236. ARXIV-2408.13236

Key takeaways

Read in full (NOTE-724).

  • Survivorship. Under 7% of pixel updates survive to the final canvas, so atlases of final artworks miss most of the collective work.
  • A cap is not equality. Under the same five-minute cooldown, activity is heavy-tailed in every edition. In 2017 the mean account placed 14 pixels and the top one 545. In 2023, 17% of actions came from accounts exceeding the cap.
  • Scale costs. Larger coalitions have a higher share of repaint-same-colour actions and lower median activity per member. The cost falls across editions as external tooling spreads.
  • Consolidation and unpredictability (2017). Recovered coalition sizes shift toward large over the event. Survival is predicted at F1 0.09 in the first 48 hours and 0.67 later from four state features.
  • Persistence under fire. Illustrated successful coalitions work against overwriting throughout. Some failures look like successes until a late collapse.

Why this is here

Registered for the r/place case (CASE-079): it could supply the units, the artworks, whose maintenance CLAIM-280 is about. It does. Its recovered coalitions are behavioural units for artworks over time, failed ones included, and its lifecycles show persistence under continual overwriting (THEORY-216). The evidence for that is ten illustrated cases, and the coalitions are validated only against final artworks. The filing summary was close. The paper does not cluster 2022 and 2023, only 2017, and what it relates to lasting or failing is coalition state, not “factors” in general. Read with Falmagne et al. (LIT-1025), it suggests that imminent overthrows are predictable from fine dynamics while final survival is not predictable early from coarse features. Its Table 1 entries for 2022 participants (108 million) and the 2017 duration (89 hours) conflict with other sources and with its own text, and are not relied on.
