The claim
A8 §3: “a participant who creates a successful design template might have almost no direct pixel-writing capacity beyond any ordinary user, yet exercise enormous influence over the pixels that thousands of other users place. Their direct semantic influence is small, but their constitutive influence over the collective’s behavior is large. And that influence need not arise through formal appointment.” Then: “Reddit’s software imposed a cooldown and common action budget, but did not give participants equal effective influence. Coordination, recruitment, attention, and automation could produce very unequal collective power.”
The cooldown is an equal per-account budget and a ban on allocating oneself extra moves through one account (CASE-079). Automation and multiple accounts got round it, most in 2023 (THEORY-216). It did not equalize influence, because following a plan turns other members’ moves into the planner’s effect. That is endorsement in TERM-053’s sense. So CLAIM-285’s constraint has to be stated over authority, not over actions. A budget on actions leaves the question untouched. The planner’s influence is CLAIM-086’s kind, governing the conditions under which moves count.
Twitch Plays Pokémon in democracy mode (CASE-074) is the contrast. There the aggregation rule is fixed and public, and influence is roughly one input, one vote, apart from herding on the visible tally.
What it does not say
- It does not say the inequality is illegitimate. It came from others’ choosing to follow.
- It does not say coordination is the only source of unequal influence. Use of the equal cooldown was itself heavy-tailed. In 2017 the average account placed 14 pixels and the most active 545, and 17% of 2023 actions came from accounts exceeding the cap (Wu and Silva, THEORY-216). Influence was unequal before any plan.
- The degree of inequality due to plans has not been measured. The placement log does not record who followed whom (CASE-079). Litherland and Mørch (THEORY-218) show from the forums that a few central members admitted or refused additions to a design that placers then carried out. That is the mechanism, observed, though not its size.
