The claim

A22 §8: “When operator authority is updated using performance assessed against the interpretation that those operators help determine, the coupled system can reinforce an initial interpretive advantage without corresponding improvement in independent evidential fidelity.” The circuit, A22 §2: frame → retrieval → interpretation → endorsement → future retrieval policy.

A22 wrote it as two coupled processes. Meaning: x_{t+1} = Σᵢ w_{i,t} P_i(q_t)ᵀ x_t over interpretations. Influence: w_{t+1} = G(w_t, x_t, o_t, E_t), with CLAIM-282’s damped delegation g = (1 − η)b + ηEᵀg as one form. Queries: q_{t+1} = Q(x_{t+1}, w_{t+1}, g). A23 VII.D: this “describes redistribution of interpretive activation, not necessarily Bayesian updating or a literal diffusion map in the spectral-geometric sense”.

Where it comes from in the record

The owner asked at U22 for the record’s formulation of “a distributed agent as a dual relation between diffusion maps”. The record holds it as two canvases: the owner’s own words at U2 of 2026-10-13, “dual to the ‘meaning’ canvas, we have an ‘influence’ canvas”, with denoising operators on the first (CLAIM-285, TERM-053). A22 did not cite those two. It cited the claims around them: CLAIM-275 (meaning, policy and influence co-evolve), CLAIM-277 (trust earned by being right, and its entrenchment loop), CLAIM-276 (coherence, fidelity and plurality are separate), CLAIM-281 (role-indexed endorsement) and CLAIM-280. This claim names a mechanism by which CLAIM-277’s entrenchment would run, and the sense in which it fails CLAIM-276’s fidelity.

What it does not say

  • Not that coupling must capture. A22: “these outcomes are not guaranteed merely by writing coupled diffusion equations. We’d need to specify update rules and derive the equilibria and their stability.”
  • Not that concentration is error. “It may reflect genuine superior evidence or expertise.”
  • Not anything about selves. A23 XIV.H: “A coupled interpretive system might exhibit expertise, habit, and lock-in without satisfying any stronger criterion of agency or selfhood.” CLAIM-288’s objection to modeller-fixed objectives applies to CASE-092 as built.

Note of 2026-10-18: the loop again, applied to affect

A32 of the exchange of 2026-10-17 applied this claim’s circuit to a learner with an internal monitor. If the monitor’s threat interpretation “increases the monitor’s authority, it may gain greater influence over which future signals are inspected”, and “The resulting distress-like regime could persist even if the external difficulty has diminished.” It split two mechanisms: “Evidence-tracking distress: Endorsement changes because a regulator accurately identifies consequential difficulties.” “Self-confirming distress: Endorsement changes because an existing interpretation selects evidence favoring its own continuation.” And: “The observable behavior might look similar. Only independent feedback, counterfactual interventions, and tests of evidence selection can distinguish the mechanisms.”

This is the second appearance of the self-confirming loop, applied to affect. The self-confirming kind is this claim’s amplification without fidelity, run on a regulatory interpretation; the evidence-tracking kind is the case this claim’s “Not that concentration is error” leaves open. The record’s lock-in, TERM-020, is the regime the self-confirming kind would keep in place. U33 later made frustration, not distress, the primitive (CLAIM-368).

Note of 2026-10-26: two running realizations, without retrieval

Two models of the Perspective Population Lab (CASE-162, dmarx/PerspectiveLab@7e2edc2) run this claim’s circuit with authority, record and competence and no retrieval.

  • In a four-variable deterministic model, self-scoring holds a declared history with A in charge from c ≈ 0.4469, although B is the better perspective at every competence the model allows. When competence grows with access, the onset falls to 0.39.
  • In a 32-member event-level population with every cue admitted, self-scoring at c = 0.5 leaves the worse alternative in charge in 39 of 64 worlds, and at c = 0 in none.

Both are an initial advantage amplified with no gain in fidelity, in stipulated models. Neither is the analysis of CASE-092 that the defeater names. Neither model has a meaning state or retrieval, and neither is set against a single adaptive-retrieval process of matched capacity. The selection effect in the same population, a reversal of the sign of the admitted evidence, is CASE-156’s and is not new here. The claim is unchanged.

Note of 2026-10-29: persuasion bias, read, is a second route, and its companion paper is the loop

DeMarzo, Vayanos and Zwiebel, LIT-1134, is now read (NOTE-1392). It shows that even without this claim’s loop, fixed listening weights give an agent influence out of proportion to its accuracy: by its Theorem 2 an unbalanced network’s consensus departs from the precision-weighted optimum with no change in anyone’s accuracy. So this claim’s loop is an addition to that route, not the only route to influence without fidelity.

The paper’s conclusion points to a companion, DeMarzo, Vayanos and Zwiebel (2001), “Social Networks and Financial Markets”, in which agents choose whom to listen to by trading profits, and stable structures have everyone listening to the same experts, who “need not be the ones with the best information, and consequently, influence can be self-perpetuating independently of accuracy”. That is the closest published statement of this claim’s loop the record has met. It is not registered, and it should be read before the loop is called new. The claim is unchanged.

Note of 2026-10-29: the companion paper, registered and not reached

DeMarzo, Vayanos and Zwiebel 2001, “Social Networks and Financial Markets”, which the earlier note of this date calls not registered and says should be read before the loop is called new, is now registered as LIT-1825. It is Unavailable: no copy of the working paper was found. So that condition stays unmet. The description in LIT-1134 leaves one difference open. In this claim an operator’s authority is scored against the interpretation it helped make dominant. In the companion, as described, listening is scored by trading profits, which depend on prices and on what the asset pays, so the score need not be self-referential. Whether it is, and whether the stable structures are reached from a small initial advantage, can only be read from the paper. The claim is unchanged.
