The case
The same writer and the same commitment as CASE-013, and the same available distractions, with nothing blocked. This afternoon the argument is coming together. Each paragraph rewards the next, and the writer works for three hours without checking email. Asked afterwards, they report no struggle and no rule. Then a notification sounds. They look, answer two messages, and going back to the draft is now the effortful thing that every other afternoon is.
Held fixed across the three afternoons: the writer’s endorsed commitment, and what the distractions offer.
What it can show
The three afternoons are three ways one agent comes to act, or fails to:
- Avoidance wins. The sooner reward overtakes the commitment (CASE-013).
- A device enforces. The efficacy conditions change while the preferences stay put (CASE-013 and ARG-005).
- Nothing has to enforce. The interests are synchronized (CLAIM-162).
It is fictional and stipulated to fit, so it illustrates and bears no weight. Whether real absorption has no reversal inside it is the claim’s prediction, not something the case shows.
