CLAIM-534: A plural will's motivational integration, a dimension of freedom of will the record names and leaves unanalysed, is the extent to which the demands it maintains are jointly met, within tolerances it can recognize, across the contexts where they interact, and kept so under its own dynamics; it is neither agreement among the demands nor the dominance of one, and its parts come apart: realizability (the tolerance frontier), realization (governance frustration), maintenance (viability) and the allocation of the tolerance each demand gives up

CLAIM-538: On a finite graph of contexts whose overlaps carry preferred real offsets a and tolerances δ_e ≥ 0, an assignment within every tolerance, |Dx − a| ≤ δ, exists exactly when no cycle's holonomy exceeds the sum of its tolerances; with every δ_e > 0 the least uniform enlargement of the tolerances that admits one is the largest ratio, over simple cycles, of holonomy to summed tolerance, so the obstruction is certified by a cycle; the feasible allocations of tolerance depend on the offsets only through their class in H¹, so local adjustment can move a mismatch among the overlaps of a cycle and never remove it; and an evaluation that omits one overlap of every witnessing cycle reports a compatibility that does not hold

QUESTION-365: When a conflict among an agent's processes is settled neither by local accommodation nor by escalation, can it be settled by another organization taking up the demand the agent's arbitration leaves ungranted, and what would tell that apart from suppression of the demand or a change in the agent's own arbitration?

THEORY-1175: Between tests, implementation intentions in the contingent if-then format had larger effects than plans that schedule when, where and what without linking cue to response (d = .43 against .29); rehearsing the plan once raised the effect, keeping a copy to revisit lowered it (.31 against .44), and adding how or for how long to a time-and-place cue roughly halved it
Oct 30, 2026
THEORY-1176: Implementation intentions affect performance only when the goal intention they serve is strong and activated, so the cue-triggered response is gated by the goal and does not fire on the cue alone
Oct 30, 2026
THEORY-1192: Across 642 experimental tests to September 2019, forming implementation intentions reliably improved behaviour, cognitive performance, affect regulation and social judgement, but publication bias was substantial: the pooled d = .36 falls to a model-averaged d = .15 under robust Bayesian meta-analysis, with large heterogeneity
Oct 30, 2026
THEORY-1227: Haken, Kelso and Bunz model the switch of rhythmic bimanual coordination from anti-phase to in-phase at a critical frequency as the loss of one stable state of an order parameter, relative phase, derived from two coupled oscillators; Kelso, Scholz and Schöner report the variability of relative phase rising before the switch in the anti-phase pattern only, in a few subjects and with no statistical test

QUESTION-308: Do the process effects of implementation intentions, the immediacy, efficiency under load and running without conscious intent of the planned response and the better detection of its cue, survive correction for publication bias or preregistered replication, and do they mediate goal attainment rather than merely accompany it?
Oct 29, 2026
QUESTION-309: Within one design, do contingent if-then plans outperform schedule plans for the same goal, sample and outcome, does recording the plan weaken it, and does rehearsal work through the accessibility of the cue or the strength of the cue–response link?
Oct 29, 2026
QUESTION-310: Does the effect of forming implementation intentions stay reliably above zero, and of the same small order, once tests published after September 2019 are added or preregistered multi-site replications are run with correction for publication bias, and does it hold outside the lab and online?
Oct 29, 2026
QUESTION-314: Is the response an implementation intention specifies gated by the goal intention it serves, so that with the goal deactivated or weak the cue alone does not produce it, and does the gate survive the plan's being acted on many times?
Oct 29, 2026
THEORY-1117: Ainslie proposes that self-control over time needs no faculty of will: hyperbolic discounting makes preferences that dominate at different delays, these grow into interests that bargain with no governor above them, and resolve is the recursive staking of expected future choices on the present one

THEORY-1110: Shenhav, Botvinick and Cohen propose that control is allocated top-down by a dedicated specifying system: dACC computes the expected value of a control signal, its probability-weighted payoff less an intrinsic cost rising with intensity, and specifies the signal that lateral prefrontal and subcortical structures implement

THEORY-904: Gollwitzer and Sheeran (2006) conclude, narratively from a handful of studies that measured or manipulated the goal intention, that implementation intentions affect performance only when the goal intention they serve is strong and activated, so the planned response is not elicited mechanically by its cue; in 2024, across eight tests, plan effects were larger with strong, activated or self-concordant goal intentions than with weak, unactivated or self-discordant ones (d = .79 for the difference), and in 31 physical-activity tests split at the median of intention, planning helped with strong intentions (d = .31) and had no effect with weak ones (d ≈ 0)
Oct 24, 2026
THEORY-908: Between tests, uncorrected for publication bias, implementation intentions in the contingent if-then format had larger effects than plans that schedule when, where and what without linking cue to response (d = .43 against .29); tests in which the plan was rehearsed had larger effects (.45 against .33, with no gain beyond one rehearsal), tests in which it was recorded had smaller ones (.31 against .44), and adding how or for how long to a time and place went with about half the effect (.24 against .46)
Oct 24, 2026
THEORY-913: In small fixed-effect meta-analytic pools without correction for publication bias, responses specified in if-then plans ran more immediately (d = .77, k = 7), held up under a concurrent cognitive load (d = .85, k = 7) and ran without conscious intent (d = .72, k = 3) compared with responses under a goal intention alone, and the planned cues were detected, attended to and remembered better (d = .80, k = 6); the authors read this as control of the response handed in advance to the cue
Oct 24, 2026
THEORY-918: Across 642 experimental tests to September 2019, forming implementation intentions improved outcomes, with uncorrected effects on behaviour (d = .27), cognitive performance (.47), affect regulation (.66) and social judgement (.52), but publication bias was substantial: the pooled d = .36 falls to a model-averaged d = .15 under robust Bayesian meta-analysis, which still found extreme evidence of an effect (BF10 = 319), with large heterogeneity

CLAIM-435: Veit's common currency and ALARM's override are two regimes of one ordering serving as the negotiation's potential, compensatory and overriding, so their rivalry over what the first felt valence did becomes the question whether the earliest potential orderings are continuous: in motivational trade-off experiments, a continuous indifference curve between a noxious cost and a resource for Veit, a discontinuity at a threshold beyond which no resource buys the cost for ALARM; only a graded override, deciding at every level of its own intensity, lacks a currency altogether

Oct 18, 2026
CLAIM-344: Resolve is a maintained organization of precedence, commitment and revision that keeps a temporally extended policy effective across changes in locally dominant evaluations while keeping the capacity to revise it; mere slowness or persistence is not resolve
Oct 18, 2026
CLAIM-358: Learned local accommodation can reduce the amortized cost of recurrent arbitration: where a recurring conflict among an agent's processes admits a stable accommodation, settling it among the processes can cost less over repeated encounters than escalating each instance to a higher-level process that mediates or overrides, though local negotiation and the relations it needs are not free
Oct 18, 2026
CLAIM-362: Non-domination of an agent's subcomponents is a candidate constituent of authenticity as an organizational achievement, not a sufficient criterion of ownership: higher-level processes need not impose the outcome because the lower-level ones already support it or settle their disagreement among themselves, and a process that rarely decides keeps access to the roles in which it is consequential
Oct 18, 2026

THEORY-409: A person's mind is normally a system of parts that take protective roles, managers, exiles and firefighters, forced on them by experience and not part of their nature; beneath the parts is a Self, distinct from all of them and present from the start, which appears with calm, curiosity and compassion when the parts step back and which heals by leading the system
Oct 16, 2026
THEORY-484: The brain implements hierarchical reinforcement learning with options: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex represents which option is active, dorsolateral striatum holds option-specific policies, orbitofrontal cortex holds option-specific values, and dopamine carries option-level prediction errors at subtask boundaries
Oct 16, 2026
THEORY-680: Emotion regulation is a set of processes distinct from emotion generation, by which people influence which emotions they have, when, and how they are experienced and expressed; regulatory acts can be sorted by the point in the generative sequence where they act, and acting before response tendencies form (reappraisal) has different consequences from acting after (suppression)
Oct 16, 2026
THEORY-688: In an actor-critic learner that can choose temporally extended options as well as primitive actions, options that fit the task speed learning, while options with ill-placed subgoals slow it, and options that fit an earlier layout keep the agent from finding a newly opened shortcut, so hierarchy helps only with the right subroutines

THEORY-689: A mobile robot built from parallel layers of simple finite-state machines, each linking sensing to action by itself and combined only by one layer suppressing or inhibiting another's signals, avoids obstacles, wanders and heads for distant places with no central world model, goal list or controller; shown at insect scale, on three layers of one physical robot

THEORY-302: Coordinated action is controlled by tuning relatively autonomous coordinative structures, not by commanding muscles: a higher level specifies an equivalence class of acceptable states and sets the parameters of self-regulating units, leaving the realized details to them
Oct 14, 2026
THEORY-307: Adaptation by trial and error in a large system finishes in a practicable time only if partial adaptations are retained, and retention requires that the system not be fully joined: parts must be separated, at least temporarily, by constancies, and where later learning shares parts with earlier learning it destroys it
Oct 14, 2026
THEORY-324: A system adapts by trial and error to an environment whose effect on its essential variables it does not know only if a second feedback, through those variables, changes the parameters of its primary feedback; and if that feedback changes them whenever, and for as long as, an essential variable is outside its limits, every equilibrium the whole can reach is an adapted one

Oct 11, 2026
CLAIM-159: The record's rival accounts of will are claims about drive profiles in different cells: Ainslie's interests are aggregate or emergent, the expected value of control is top-down, and will-organization is the maintained organization that governs how the drive profile changes
Oct 11, 2026
CLAIM-162: In flow an activity's immediate reward and its longer-run value coincide, so no interest has to be overridden (synchronization as non-crossing valuations, with no dynamical mechanism claimed), and that is why focused action in flow is reported as effortless
Oct 11, 2026
CLAIM-163: "Synchronization" is an analogy without a mechanism: phase synchrony among coupled oscillators has a coupling, an order parameter and transitions, valuations that fail to cross have none of these, and the word adds nothing to "the curves do not cross"

- complex-systems
Oct 11, 2026
