The question

From an interlocutor’s reading of LIT-638 against CLAIM-163, relayed by the owner on 2026-10-12. The reading: “coordination need not take the form of uniform synchronization. A system can exhibit coherent global organization through spatially differentiated, mobile, interacting structures.” Applied to the will: “Instead of asking whether interests become synchronized in phase, ask whether their interactions create stable or metastable patterns of coordination, potentially involving distinct functional roles, boundaries, and pathways of influence.” And: “Distinct interests might remain differentiated while participating in a coordinated organization. Integration need not mean homogeneity or consensus.”

It refines QUESTION-034. That question’s three candidates (bargaining, a change in which interest may act, agreement) all ask how many become one. This asks whether becoming one means becoming alike.

Why the record needs it

CLAIM-162 calls flow intrapersonal synchronization (TERM-050), and CLAIM-163 objects that the word has no coupling, collective variable or transitions behind it. If integration is coordination of differentiated parts, the objection’s standard can be met by collective variables other than relative phase, and CLAIM-162’s “no interest has to be overridden” may be the wrong mark of integration.

What the record holds

  • THEORY-088 (LIT-638, read in NOTE-502): slow cortical activity is organized by interacting spiral defects around phase singularities, not by uniform phase locking. It is a neural case of differentiated, interacting structures with global organization. It measures no interests or valuations.
  • QUESTION-054’s two sides, a separate governing level or governance as the interaction of regimes, bear on whether the coordination needs a coordinator.

What would answer it

A collective variable for a population of interests that stays well defined while the interests stay distinct, with evidence that it predicts choices or lapses. Or an argument that integration of a will needs agreement among its interests.

Filed as advice from the interlocutor’s reading; the record takes no position.

Note of 2026-10-18: practical synchronization, and differentiated roles

The exchange of 2026-10-17 gave this question’s second side a name without citing the question. A44: “Indeed, unity of governance should not require unity of valuation”, and “An organization may be well integrated because it has maintained arrangements for handling disagreement, not because it has eliminated disagreement.” A45’s broader sense of synchronization, filed as TERM-061, is coordination of regimes that keep their own rankings. The owner’s U45 thesis on escalation (CLAIM-358) says what that coordination saves.

A46, at the owner’s U46 on niche specialization, gave the differentiated-roles half: “intrapersonal synchronization may be better modeled as the emergence of a functioning ecology of complementary processes than as convergence toward a shared preference ranking.” That is a candidate answer, not a result. The question’s own test, a collective variable that stays defined while the interests stay distinct, is not met: A45’s candidate, how often a higher level must intervene, is unmeasured.
