Definition

An agent’s available action-generating regimes (TERM-019) are synchronized on a course of action over a horizon when each of them ranks that course first from every delay at which it is evaluated within the horizon. The course then becomes effective without any regime being overridden, bargained with or suspended.

They are desynchronized over a horizon where their valuations of the course cross within it. The paradigm is hyperbolic preference reversal: a smaller, sooner reward ranked second from a distance and first just before it is due (THEORY-067).

Synchronization is a matter of degree in two ways. It can hold over a shorter or longer horizon. And it can hold among more or fewer of the regimes in play.

What it is not

  • Not neural phase synchrony. No oscillation, coupling or order parameter is part of the definition. Whether the word earns more than a name is CLAIM-163’s objection.
  • Not agreement at one moment. All the interests can rank the larger, later reward first at the time of choosing and still be desynchronized, if their curves cross before the sooner reward is due. That is Ainslie’s case exactly.
  • Not integration by arbitration. When one regime wins against others, as in reliability arbitration (THEORY-062), a bargain (THEORY-067) or a costly override (THEORY-070), the agent acts as one but its regimes are not synchronized. Synchronization is the case in which there is no contest to win.
  • Not will-organization (TERM-023). Will-organization is the maintained organization of relations that governs which regime is effective. Synchronization is a condition in which that organization has nothing to decide.

Note of 2026-10-18: a broader sense, filed as a new term

The owner, at U45 of the exchange of 2026-10-17, on A44’s gloss of this term: “we should probably propose a more general definition for this term, especially in light of how our understanding of intrapersonal ranking compatibility has evolved.” A45 drafted a revision of this term, marked “Proposed revision to an Active term; not yet adopted”: regimes that “sustain mutually compatible courses of practical activity without requiring recurrent overriding arbitration by processes operating at a higher level of governance”, whatever their rankings.

The record files that sense as a new term, TERM-061 (practical synchronization), and leaves this one as it is. A changed definition is a new TERM, and six claims are stated in this one. A45 itself called this sense “Valuational concordance”, “the special case captured by the previous definition”. It is not a special case: agreement in rankings needs no coupling, and coordination needs no agreement, so the two are independent dimensions (the owner, in review of the filing; table in TERM-061). This term keeps its own role, and is not superseded.
