The question

In the democracy-mode variant of Twitch Plays Pokémon with the tally visible (CASE-074), the voters can come to agree quickly. That is not because they want the same thing. Each one sees where the majority is going and follows it. The agreement is in what the crowd does, and it is produced by the coupling. The voters’ valuations need not move at all.

The record has two accounts of how an agent’s interests come to act together without a fight:

  • They agree in value. In flow the immediate reward and the longer-run value coincide, so no interest has to be overridden (CLAIM-162, TERM-050).
  • One is kept from acting. Mindfulness suspends the step from an interest’s momentary dominance to its control of action, and leaves its valuation alone (CLAIM-156).

Agreement by coupling fits neither. The parts do not agree in value, and none of them is suspended. Each one changes what it does because of what the others are doing.

Why the record needs it

  • If coupled agreement is a distinct route, CLAIM-162’s “no interest has to be overridden” no longer marks flow off from conformity. Both are effortless in that sense, and the account of flow needs a further mark.
  • It bears on CLAIM-163. Coupled agreement is the one route that has the parts CLAIM-163 asks for: a coupling, a collective variable and transitions. If it turns out to be what intrapersonal “synchronization” actually is, the word may earn its mechanism, though not in the sense TERM-050 gives it.
  • It bears on CLAIM-198. There, the coupling through self-prediction is where interests contend. In the case, a coupling makes them converge.

What would answer it

  • Within one person: a case where interests come to agree in action because each tracks the agent’s current overall leaning, with their valuations measured as unchanged. Momentum in a choice, a “decided” feeling that recruits the reluctant interest, or the escalation of commitment are candidates, none of them in the record.
  • Against the distinction: an argument that coupled agreement reduces to one of the two existing routes. For example, the coupling might change the valuations after all, which would make it the flow route, or it might work by suspending the minority, which would make it CLAIM-156’s route.

Drawn by the assistant and filed at the owner’s request; the record takes no position.

Note of 2026-10-18: the route named

This question said that if coupled agreement is what intrapersonal synchronization is, “the word may earn its mechanism, though not in the sense TERM-050 gives it”. The exchange of 2026-10-17 took that route without citing the question. A44 listed “Coupled coordination” as a fourth mechanism of unity, citing this question as open: processes “converge on the same behavior by responding to one another, although their valuations need not converge”. A45 then defined the broader sense, filed as TERM-061 (practical synchronization), and recommended for this question: “Make local negotiation and counterfactual process influence explicit”.

The exchange’s route is wider than this question’s case. Herding converges on what the majority does. The owner’s U45 has processes that “negotiate amongst themselves”, and A45’s Person B (CASE-109) finds a course each process can accommodate. Both are agreement in action without agreement in value. A44: “unity of governance should not require unity of valuation.”

Not answered. There is still no within-person case with the valuations measured unchanged, and nothing yet shows that negotiated coordination does not reduce to suspension (CLAIM-156) or to a change of value.
