Why it is a question

The record reads the self as many in several places. Ainslie’s interests bargain across delays (THEORY-067). Minsky’s and Selfridge’s societies are compositions of mindless agents (THEORY-043). Internal Family Systems has simultaneous parts led by a Self (LIT-591). Emotion regulation is one motive state checking another (THEORY-056). Each says how the many are composed. Of how they come to act as one, the record holds one mechanism, bargaining by precedent, and one rival, Bratman’s intrapersonal shared intention (THEORY-076).

The owner’s prompt names three further candidates: temporal discounting as the source of the problem, and mindfulness and flow as two ways it is solved. They are not obviously the same kind of solution. Bargaining leaves the conflict in place and outweighs it. Mindfulness, on ACT’s reading (THEORY-051), leaves the impulse in place and changes its standing. Flow, as it is described, has no conflict to resolve.

QUESTION-015 asks what maintained relations govern which regime becomes effective. This question takes the population case and asks which of three things does the governing:

  • enforcement among the interests, as in bargaining or precommitment;
  • a change in which interest may act, with their valuations unchanged: suspension and accessibility in TERM-017’s and CLAIM-027’s sense;
  • agreement among them, so that there is nothing to govern: the interests are synchronized on the course of action (TERM-050).

What would count as an answer

A way to tell the three apart in a given episode of self-control, and a showing that the episodes the literature calls flow and mindfulness fall on the sides the record claims. The record’s proposed answers are CLAIM-169, which says where the population comes from; CLAIM-162, which says flow is agreement; and CLAIM-156, which says mindfulness is a change in which interest may act. The standing objection to calling any of this synchronization is CLAIM-163.

A list of further techniques of self-control is not an answer. Ainslie already lists external constraint, attention control and emotion control beside will. Nor is a demonstration that mindfulness or flow improves self-control: every route does that.

What is already known

  • Hyperbolic discounting, and the preference reversal it predicts, are well supported. That the reversal is what makes the interests many is THEORY-067’s reading, and its mechanism is untested.
  • The record holds no reading on flow and no study of mindfulness and discounting. The works it would need are registered unread: LIT-914, LIT-912, LIT-910, LIT-906 and LIT-916.

Note of 2026-10-12: a typed partial answer

THEORY-076 (Bratman), which this question names as a rival to bargaining, now carries an answered_by edge.

Note of 2026-10-12: a typed partial answer

THEORY-044 now carries an answered_by edge. In ACT’s self-as-context perspective, content and process are both contacted but “neither obtain absolute control” over the decision. That supports this question’s second option, a change in which interest may act. It is the reading CLAIM-156 already relies on.
