The claim

The owner’s position, given on 2026-10-12: synchronization of an agent’s interests (TERM-050) is “desirable, but absolutely not necessary. Internal conflict is an easy demonstration in the case of human agents.”

It is not necessary. A person who wants the cake and keeps to the diet acts, and the act is theirs. The interest that lost has not gone away. It is still pressing while the person acts, and it is still the person’s interest. The reluctant writer (CASE-013) finishes the article with distractions blocked and the wish to look at them intact. Unity of action is achieved over a division that remains. That is the “differentiated interests in a coordinated organization” side of QUESTION-078.

It is desirable. When the interests agree, as on the absorbed writer’s afternoon (CASE-051), nothing has to be overridden or enforced. CLAIM-162 takes that to be why flow is reported as effortless. The divided agent pays for its unity in effort, devices and lapses.

What it bears on

  • CLAIM-162 holds that flow is synchronization. This claim adds that flow is the good case, not the only case, of acting as one. CLAIM-162’s summary already disclaims “the best or the normal way to act as one” for synchronization. This claim says what the other ways are.
  • CLAIM-198 says a self is divided over a choice only on an overlap. This claim says that a self divided on an overlap can still act as one there.
  • The objection that synchronization lacks a mechanism, once CLAIM-163, is now in ARG-016. If synchronization is not what acting as one consists in, the objection bears on the account of the good case and not on the account of integration as a whole.

What it does not say

It does not say how a divided agent comes to act as one: by bargaining, by one interest taking control, or by a governing level. That is QUESTION-034 and QUESTION-054. It does not say that every divided agent acts as one, since some lapse. And it does not say that synchronization is desirable for every agent or in every respect. A population that never disagrees may also never notice what it is missing.

Note of 2026-10-18: what the divided agent pays for

A44 of the exchange of 2026-10-17 proposed a correction on effort: “An authentically maintained goal may demand more effort, not less.” It was set against authenticity (“the simplistic assumption that authenticity reduces effort”), not against this claim, which is the record’s effort claim and which A44 did not cite. The owner, at U45, said what the effortful case is: “The “more effortful” intrapersonal conflict case is the one in which the internal modules don’t negotiate amongst themselves and instead require escalating to higher level processes to mediate.”

CLAIM-358 refines this claim’s “The divided agent pays for its unity in effort, devices and lapses”. It pays for escalation. A divided agent whose regimes settle their disagreement among themselves pays less while staying divided, which is practical synchronization (TERM-061) without synchronization in TERM-050’s sense. CLAIM-358 rests on this claim. A45’s Person A (CASE-109) is this claim’s divided agent. The status is unchanged.
