The claim

A7: “A self may be modeled as a metastable, recursively compositional organization of heterogeneous processes that transform meaning and regulate one another’s opportunities to influence subsequent cognition and action. Authority, trust, specialization, and higher-level agency arise endogenously through history-dependent interaction rather than being imposed by a privileged executive.” Its §9: “General hypothesis: Several psychological phenomena typically assigned to different faculties can be modeled as distinct dynamical regimes of a shared organizational architecture.”

A5 §4 gave the first mappings, “explanatory hypotheses, not established mappings”:

  • ambivalence as coalitions endorsing incompatible actions;
  • habit as historically reliable policies keeping influence with little evaluation;
  • rumination as a recurrent coalition re-exciting a narrow trajectory;
  • insight as weakly coupled regions becoming connected;
  • identity change as a durable reconfiguration of the influence topology.

A6 added cascades (Hawkes processes), and A7 §9 procrastination and akrasia.

The record already reads several of these this way: procrastination (CASE-013, CLAIM-047), lock-in (TERM-020, QUESTION-045) and preference reversal (CLAIM-198). What this claim adds is that one set of variables should cover them all. A5 §8 gave them: persistence of the influence topology, responsiveness to feedback, diversity of influential processes, concentration of authority and cross-regional transport. It bears on QUESTION-088, whose test is the same as this claim’s defeater.

What it does not say

  • It does not say the organization is a self. A7: “A useful theory of psychological organization should stand even if its constitutive claims remain contested.” The constitutive half is CLAIM-284.
  • It does not say the mappings are established. A7 §14: “Computational similarity to a phenomenon is insufficient evidence that the same mechanism explains the human case.”
  • It is under A7 §14’s objection, which A7 granted, filed as CLAIM-278 and now ARG-036, which finds the lab’s evidence does not yet support it.

Note of 2026-10-29: what holds it back

No prediction in the record follows from the shared organizational variables and not from phenomenon-specific or central-executive models with flexibility penalized, which is this claim’s defeated_if and QUESTION-088’s test. The one argument concluding it, ARG-036, fails its own critical question (the lab’s matched comparators find the organizational vocabulary adds no constraint), and CLAIM-467 undercuts it.

Note of 2026-10-30: what holds it back

Rechecked after CLAIM-467 went Active (2026-10-30). That firms the undercut of ARG-036, the one argument concluding this claim, and does not supply what the claim waits on: a prediction that follows from the shared organizational variables and not from phenomenon-specific or central-executive models with flexibility penalized (its defeated_if; QUESTION-088’s test).
