The claim

Read through TERM-051, with the person as parts (interests or regimes) and a higher level (resolve, control, the will):

  • THEORY-1117 (Ainslie). “Interests … are not options chosen by an overarching ego”, and the person is “just the resultant”. That is the aggregate kind. If resolve, the recursive staking of future choices, is a property only the bargaining process has, it is the emergent kind, with decoupling. The précis does not say which.
  • THEORY-1110 (expected value of control). A dedicated system computes how much control to exert and specifies it to implementing structures. That is the top-down kind, with a designated driver.
  • CLAIM-027 and TERM-023 (will-organization). “The maintained organization of relations governing the conditions under which an agent’s available action-generating regimes acquire, retain, lose, or alter practical efficacy.” These are the conditions under which the driver changes. Will-organization is a claim about the system’s drive history: what governs which regime drives, and when. That is the owner’s point that “who drives” is not constant (CLAIM-316), given a home in the will line.

If this holds, part of the dispute among the three is a dispute about which cell an agent resisting temptation occupies. That is measurable in principle, with the decomposition over windows around a temptation.

What it does not say

  • That the three exclude each other. A person could be aggregate over some choices and top-down over others, which is the time-varying point again.
  • That the placement is the authors’. None of them uses these terms.

Note of 2026-10-27: a reply to CLAIM-024

The status review of this date (ADR-057) added objects_to: CLAIM-024. CLAIM-024 says that control and institutional theory already study every mechanism the account names. This claim’s placement is a partial reply on two of its four fronts. The expected value of control is top-down and Ainslie’s interests are aggregate or emergent, and will-organization is a claim about what governs how the profile changes. Planning theory and institutional theory are not placed.

Note of 2026-10-28: what holds it back

Kept Proposed by the sixth status review. No comparison of the drive profiles THEORY-067, THEORY-070 and CLAIM-027 predict for an agent resisting temptation is in the record, and THEORY-067’s placement (aggregate or emergent) is undecided: “The précis does not say which”.

Note of 2026-10-28: grounded in what the account proposes

At the owner’s direction, CLAIM-159 now grounds on THEORY-1110, the record’s held reading of what Shenhav, Botvinick and Cohen propose, rather than on THEORY-070, which asks whether the proposal is true. Placing the account in the top-down cell needs only the proposal. The claim stays Proposed: its other ground, THEORY-067, is Proposed, and the note above says what else holds it. The same split for THEORY-067, a held reading of what the précis proposes, would remove that premise as a blocker too.
