The claim
The writer’s intention is not in the stored bits. Every attribution of an intended meaning is itself made by some reader, the writer included, at some later time, from the text and whatever context survives. So “the meaning fixed by the write” is a reading privileged by convention. An unread text supports a range of meanings, which CLAIM-111 already models as a distribution over communicative situations. It has no one meaning until it is read, and then it has as many as it has readings.
The joke over a life (CASE-048) is this objection’s best case. The adult who finally gets the double entendre does not experience recovering a fixed meaning. They experience the scene becoming a different joke.
Why it is still open
The reply in CLAIM-160 separates intended meaning from what a reader can reconstruct, and lets the second vary. It holds against the joke only if the writer’s frame is a fact independent of every reading. The film’s dual address is evidence that it is, since the adult layer was written to be missed. But the line’s own account of identity runs through probes and receivers (CLAIM-140, QUESTION-031). Nothing filed says how a projected receiver is identified other than by a reading. No reader-response or reception theory is held, so the objection is stated here from the record’s materials only.
Note of 2026-10-12: a non-reading identification of the receiver
This claim says “Nothing filed says how a projected receiver is identified other than by a reading.” PR #121’s round of 2026-10-10 restated CLAIM-151 at version 2, where the constituents are relations to participant roles, TERM-040’s positions, so that a new audience in the same role keeps them. On version 2 the constituent is fixed by a role, not by any audience’s reading. That is one filed candidate for identifying a projected receiver otherwise than by a reading; whether it identifies the writer’s projected receiver, or only the addressee position, no entry argues. CLAIM-226 bears in this claim’s direction on the measurement side: “for historical sources there is no source audience at all”. QUESTION-073 holds the reception-side readings this claim says the record lacks, Austin on uptake and Goffman on keying, both unread.
Note of 2026-10-30: what holds it back
Unanswered: whether a writer’s projected receiver can be identified other than by a reading. Two filed candidates say it can, and neither is held: CLAIM-151 version 2’s role-based constituents, which no entry argues fix the projected receiver rather than the addressee position (QUESTION-031); and Grice’s analysis (THEORY-444, read in full in NOTE-735), on which what an utterer means is fixed by the utterer’s intention toward an audience and read by public criteria, so that being identified through a reading would not make it constituted by one. The reception-side readings this objection needs (QUESTION-073: Austin on uptake, Goffman on keying) are unread.
Note of 2026-10-31: held readings on this side, and what they cost
This claim says “No reader-response or reception theory is held”. Since 2026-10-31 the record holds three readings, all Proposed, that take a systemic form of its position.
- Bencherki, Brummans and Vézy (LIT-1902, THEORY-1278): “action contributes to informing a system that, retrospectively, gives that action its meaning” (p. 1357). And: “What communication (and information) means is not so much what people think about it, but rather how it affects them” (p. 1358).
- Bencherki and Iliadis (LIT-1922, THEORY-1276): the meaning of an action “corresponds to its participation in the resolution of a disparity of ordering” (proposition 3).
- Bencherki 2017 (LIT-1901, THEORY-1285): “Concurrent significations, then, are not mere misunderstandings, but rather the outcomes of simultaneous individuation processes” (p. 783).
They go further than this claim. It says an unread text has possible meanings and takes on one with each reading. They say meaning is the effect on the system that takes an action up. They also set the writer’s intention aside as a matter of method: research “grounded in people’s understandings is unable to attune to the processual nature of the world” (LIT-1902, p. 1358). So they give CLAIM-160’s intended meaning no slot at all, which is stronger than this claim’s “a reading privileged by convention”.
They do not answer what holds this claim open, whether a projected receiver can be identified other than by a reading. They do not ask it. They also show what the position costs at full strength. If meaning is the reordering an action produces, it is known only after the reordering (THEORY-1276, “What this does not say”). Every reordering qualifies, so nothing counts as failing to mean. Bencherki and Iliadis’s evidence that an ordering propagated is that the event took place (NOTE-1483, Limitations). The systemic view cannot draw CLAIM-160’s reply to CASE-048, that the child’s reading is the layer addressed to the child. On it, the child’s and the adult’s readings are two concurrent significations, with nothing to say which was addressed to whom.
The readings show that the position is held in organization studies. They are conceptual and are not evidence for it. The open point is unchanged.
