Nico H. Frijda (1988), American Psychologist 43(5):349–358 — DOI-10.1037/0003-066X.43.5.349
Key takeaways
Registered, not read. The following is what read works in the record say of it, attributed to them.
- Mood as information about the group. Barsade (LIT-706, read) cites it for mood contagion being “a direct source of information in its own right for providing information about the how the group is doing”.
- Flexible modulation. Gross (LIT-554, read) cites it on the flexible modulation of emotion (p. 288, as NOTE-429 records).
- What the laws are is not stated by any read work in the record, so it is not stated here. Search-engine summaries name several, but none was read from a source the record can use.
Standing in the record
Filed on 2026-10-04 at the owner’s request, as the shorter substitute for Frijda’s 2007 book The Laws of Emotion, and as the “efficient first step” that the entry for The Emotions (LIT-546) names. Frijda, Ridderinkhof and Rietveld (LIT-540), the record’s read statement of action readiness, already stands in for The Emotions. On 2026-10-03 the filing of LIT-540 tried this article and could not reach it lawfully. Neither could this one.
The 2007 book is not filed. The owner’s rule files a book as a Deferred seed only if the record would lose something without it. Here it would not. This article carries the laws in their short form, LIT-546 carries the canonical theory, and LIT-540 the read late statement. A book entry would be a third unread Frijda with nothing to say that these do not. NOTE-433 records that LIT-540 cites the 2007 book alongside The Emotions; that citation has no entry, and a reader following it can start here.
Where it bears, once read:
- On collective emotion. Von Scheve & Ismer (LIT-696) explain convergence through shared appraisal structures, that is, through concerns members share. Concern is the condition of emotion in Frijda’s theory as LIT-540 states it: “In the absence of concern pertinence, … no emotion”. Von Scheve & Ismer also use Frijda’s later (1994) account of sentiments as appraisal dispositions for their group-based sentiments. The laws would say whether a shared concern is all that shared emotion needs.
- On regulation. Gross cites it on the flexible modulation of emotion. A reading would say whether it already holds the view LIT-540 defends, that regulation is part of emotion, on which THEORY-056 rests.
No relation is declared. A relation to LIT-546 or LIT-540 needs the text.
Priority for a reading: medium, and higher than the book’s. Ten pages, and they would let the record say what the laws are.
