Definition

A33 §2 first separated “an interpretive frame from the operation of framing”: A and B “prompt someone to interpret an utterance through affectionate complicity” or “moral judgment”. A39 §3.2 made the split explicit: a framing intervention is “an action that changes the conditions under which an utterance is interpreted”. “Avoid conflating these concepts:

  • A friend speaking is a property of a communicative situation.
  • Telling a reader that the speaker is a friend is an intervention.
  • Asking a reader to consider an utterance as affectionate is another intervention.”

What it is not

Not the frame (TERM-030). The split exposes an ambiguity in A30’s operators A and B (TERM-026), which were at once a frame adopted and a question asked. A35 §6 had seen the consequence for experiments: “forcing a participant to make an explicit judgment is itself an intervention.” The manuscript’s “stochastic framing operations” (§9) are interventions in this sense, and its §10 measurement protocol separates “context-free descriptions from elicitation-context variables”.
