The objection
CLAIM-068 holds that “pragmatic stances, not only lexicon and grammar, can be stabilized by transmission”, and quotes A52 §7.5 extending “iterated learning from lexical and grammatical structure to speaker footing and communicative conventions”. Its defeat condition is about stances: chains “started from different stances do not converge toward a small set of conventional stances”.
What the readings it and CLAIM-066 draw on measure:
- Griffiths and Kalish (THEORY-155): a theorem about learners who share a prior over languages; sampling learners converge to the prior. No measurement.
- Kirby, Cornish and Smith (LIT-771): an artificial 27-item lexicon, whose compositional structure appeared only under the experimenter’s homonym filter (CLAIM-066).
- Kalish, Griffiths and Lewandowsky (LIT-820): function learning, 32 chains converging mostly to a positive linear function.
- Raviv, Meyer and Lev-Ari (LIT-825, THEORY-164): the systematicity of invented languages in groups of four and eight. CLAIM-068: “This is horizontal interaction, not a chain.”
- Propp (THEORY-167): the structure of a corpus of tales. CLAIM-068: “not a measurement of retellings”.
- Farrell, Gopnik, Shalizi and Evans (THEORY-173): a mechanism stated and not tested. CLAIM-068: “so it is weak support”.
None measures an interpersonal stance, a footing or a speech-act function along a chain. The extension to footing has no study under it. Bartlett’s Remembering (LIT-768), the classic serial-reproduction study, is held Deferred and unread. The transmission-chain work on social and affective content is absent: a search of the record on 2026-10-10 for Mesoudi, Bebbington, Stubbersfield, Breithaupt, Moussaïd and “negativity bias” finds nothing. That work studies which kinds of content survive chains (social information, threat, affect against fact), which bears directly on whether complicity or moralizing is the attractor in CLAIM-068’s running case. No check has been made whether the Anthology of the SOTA holds any of it.
CLAIM-066 already separates what the three iterated-learning citations show, and says which learner model applies decides “whether the endpoint reflects the learners or the transmission filter”. It does not say that none of them bears on stance.
What it does not say
It does not say that stances are not stabilized by transmission, nor that CLAIM-068 is false. It says the record holds no evidence for the stance version of the claim, and names the literature that would be its evidence. It is minor for the argument: CLAIM-068 feeds CLAIM-059’s regimes, not the central theses CLAIM-115 and CLAIM-139. It is also a reading-list gap for the owner, to be checked against the anthology before anything is filed here.
Note of 2026-10-10: a documented case
The search of 2026-10-10 that the owner asked for found the chain studies this objection names as absent, and CASE-068 files two of them: Moussaïd, Brighton and Gaissmaier (2015) and Jagiello and Hills (2018). Each codes, at every link of a serial-reproduction chain with a different reteller at each step, the evaluative stance of the message toward a hazard, on a scheme separate from its content. The content decays and diverges; the evaluative signal is kept and drifts negative; the transmitters’ measured risk perception predicts the direction of the change.
The concession therefore narrows. For evaluative stance, a stance toward a topic, the record now has chain evidence, documented, bearing on CLAIM-068 and on CLAIM-090’s measured-prior condition. For footing, interpersonal stance and speech-act function, it still has none: neither study codes who stands behind a statement, whom it addresses or whether it teases or reproaches, and the search found no chain study that does. The closest, Altay, Claidière and Mercier (2020) on source attribution in rumours, is a single transmission step. CLAIM-068’s extension “to speaker footing” stays without a study.
What the case does not supply: chains started from different stances, which CLAIM-068’s defeat condition needs; a clean prior (Moussaïd’s correlation uses a risk perception reported after the experiment and measured indirectly); and a reply to the reading of the signal as the valence of the content that survived. A footing chain would need the measurement that QUESTION-076 asks for first. The Anthology of the SOTA was checked and holds neither study.
Note of 2026-10-27: the edge says what the claim uses
The status review of this date (ADR-057, ADR-058) re-grounded the claim in the works it reports measurements from: Propp (LIT-828) in place of THEORY-167, and Farrell et al. (LIT-848) in place of THEORY-173. It already did this for Raviv et al. (LIT-825). The claim uses what each work measured, not its thesis.
Note of 2026-10-28: moved to ARG-027
This claim says the record’s iterated-learning readings do not measure stance or footing along a chain, which is a verdict on support. It moved to ARG-027, from those readings to CLAIM-068, form evidence, Rejected, with the note of 2026-10-10 on CASE-068 in its body. The text above is unchanged.
