Why it is a question

A18, closing the relativity analogy: “Is there a frame-independent communicative act that translations approximate, or is the identity of the act itself constituted through a family of frame-relative realizations?” The first position “has a more straightforward relativistic structure: an invariant object underlying coordinate-dependent descriptions”. The second is “closer to Hofstadter’s fluid conception of identity through analogy … Our translations help us discover what we take the poem to be.”

A24 dropped the underlying act object (“we may have been searching for the wrong kind of invariant”) and refined the question into QUESTION-001.

Where it stands

The manuscript answers for the second position without saying so: communicative identity is characterized “rather than a privileged global semantic object” (Abstract), and “Neither a high-level latent coordinate nor a fixed hierarchy of levels is assumed primitive” (§2). Its answer is CLAIM-115, which is Proposed, so the question stays Open. What would settle it is an argument, or a result, that the first position predicts worse: a latent act variable that adds nothing once the relational observables are measured.

Three further answers were proposed on 2026-10-10, none argued against the first position.

  • Relational constitution, for the second position. A187 §3 made explicit what the manuscript had left implicit: “The identity of a communicative act is partly constituted by its relations to participants, norms, interpretive conditions, and possible conversational consequences” (CLAIM-151).
  • Neither horn, from the owner. U54 models the act on a group character (CLAIM-137). A character does not depend on the basis, so it is frame-independent. But it is not a further object beside the representations: it is the invariant of their isomorphism class.
  • A repeatable kind. A218’s “communicative kind” (TERM-040) is neither an underlying act object nor a bare family of realizations, but a repeatable organization that numerically distinct events realize. It reopens the question that A24 had refined away into QUESTION-001.

The first two are Proposed claims, and the third is a term A218 never defines formally, so the question stays Open. Two later questions refine it: which interventions tell constitutive relations from diagnostic ones (QUESTION-030), and when relational structure warrants treating a communicative category as a real kind (QUESTION-028).
