Why it is a question
A203 X, at the end of the assistant’s second crystallized argument (U56, 2026-10-10 02:52): “The final question is no longer simply what does a translation preserve? It is: What constitutes the identity of a relationally organized object, how can that identity be recognized independently of any particular representation, and under what transformations does it persist?” The October proposal ends on a shorter form of the same question (A218, U60): “How can a relationally constituted kind remain identifiable and useful when the representation through which we encounter it changes?”
The change of question was announced, which the record’s earlier changes of thesis were not (workbench 025539 on CLAIM-017 and CLAIM-115). It was not argued. The owner’s turns in between asked for the argument to be laid out (U56) or tied together (U59), and for a new proposal (U60).
The question has three parts, and the record holds a different amount on each.
- What constitutes the identity. This is QUESTION-021’s question, now given a relational answer. A187 §3 proposed partial constitution by relations to participants, norms and uptake (CLAIM-151). The owner’s U54 proposed relata with no identity beyond their relations (CLAIM-136). The record holds objections to both readings (CLAIM-134, CLAIM-138).
- How it can be recognized apart from a representation. This is where characters, Yoneda and identifiability enter (CLAIM-137, CLAIM-142, CLAIM-135). The signature question QUESTION-027 is its constructive half.
- Under which transformations it persists. This is QUESTION-002 turned round: not what a translation keeps, but which transformations keep a kind.
An answer would say what the unit of identity is (the record files it as a communicative kind, TERM-040), what independent evidence recognizes it, and for which classes of transformation that evidence is stable. A thesis that answers only the first part is metaphysics. One that answers only the second and third is QUESTION-002 again.
How it differs from QUESTION-002 and QUESTION-021
QUESTION-002 asks what survives a translation, retelling or rendering. It takes the transformation as given and asks about its output. This question takes the kind as given and asks what makes it one kind and which transformations it survives. Translation becomes one case. A203’s opening says so: “Translation was our starting point, but the underlying problem is more general”.
QUESTION-021 asks whether there is a frame-independent act or only a family of frame-relative realizations. A24 dropped the underlying act object and refined that question into QUESTION-001. This question reopens it with a third option: a repeatable relational organization that numerically distinct events realize (A218 §1: “We distinguish numerical identity of concrete events from structural identity of repeatable communicative kinds”).
What it is not
It is not a question about objects in general. A203’s preamble, A214 and A218
speak of “objects”, but A203 §35’s own ontological thesis is scoped to
“Communicative acts and other structured phenomena”, and no turn argues the
generalization. A question about the identity of objects as such would need a
line of its own, and lines is closed by decision.
It does not presuppose that the answer is relational. That is the October thesis’s answer (CLAIM-139). The question stands if the thesis falls.
Note of 2026-10-21: the operational parts restated
A27 of the exchange of 2026-10-20 offered equivalence under a declared family of probes and interventions, u ∼_{𝒬,ℐ} v when every response kernel agrees, as “a substantial answer to two-thirds” of this question, leaving constitution open. The relation is a correct equivalence, asked for as a term at A13 and A14 and filed as TERM-069. It is CLAIM-142, with CLAIM-135’s split between identification and constitution and CLAIM-150’s guard. A27’s “modest impossibility result” (models that agree on every probe cannot be told apart on an unperformed intervention) is QUESTION-027’s “What is already known”. This question’s own text says what such an answer amounts to: one that answers only the second and third parts “is QUESTION-002 again”. A27’s three-way table, constitutive identity against operational equivalence against “legible identity” for a given receiver, restates CLAIM-135 with CLAIM-115’s receiver.
