Definition
A24: “Instead of beginning with a fixed communicative act U that gets expressed in different frames, consider a communicative situation described by C = (u, s, a, k, g)”: utterance, socially situated speaker, audience, shared knowledge and conventions, genre. A pragmatic judgement is context-indexed, P(J = j | C). Translation changes u (and k, g) while trying to keep s; reattributing the words changes s while keeping u.
What it is not
Not Goffman’s footing, though it absorbs it. Footing was a participant role (A14); here it is an index on judgement distributions, and the change was not remarked. Not the operator sense of TERM-026: a context indexes a distribution, an operator changes a state. The manuscript keeps both: contexts as the cover of §3, framing operations in §9.
Why it is still Active
TERM-030 extended this situation tuple with norms and history. The index on judgement distributions survives as the manuscript’s measurement contexts (§3). It is not the elicitation protocol that A125 read into its title; that sense is TERM-039.
