The claim

A39 §4.4: “different hidden-state models may produce identical observations”; “Distinguish predictive or operational equivalence from equivalence of internal representations.” A39’s preamble: the revision “prevents us from prematurely defining faithful translation as preservation of internal cognitive states we cannot observe or uniquely identify”. A39 §3.3 accordingly demoted the interpretive state: its dimensions “do not define a unique natural coordinate system”, and states are “model-dependent and potentially latent”.

Manuscript §2: “We use ‘observable’ in an operational rather than narrowly physical sense … Neither a high-level latent coordinate nor a fixed hierarchy of levels is assumed primitive. Latent variables may be learned as compressed summaries of recurring observational patterns, but their significance must be validated by predictive consequences.” §3: “An observational equivalence class identifies realizations indistinguishable by the chosen procedures.”

The owner’s U27 request to “use higher order latents to characterize the more abstract similarity” (CLAIM-008) tested this. A73 answered with latents identified “through independently testable communicative contrasts”. After U28 (CLAIM-042), A75 demoted them to “compressed representations of recurring patterns across these observational constraints. They are not the ontological foundation”, which is the manuscript’s §2 wording in substance.

What it does not say

That meaning is nothing but behaviour (CLAIM-112). Nor that states are useless: the manuscript’s §8–9 still transports state representations, which CLAIM-011 bears on.
