The objection
The operational stance. CLAIM-038 (A78): “we no longer need to postulate a global semantic object and then ask how translations represent it. We can begin with local observational data and investigate whether a global object exists.” CLAIM-046: “pragmatic identity and fidelity should be defined on observable responses before any equivalence of internal states is assumed”. The record files the object in two Active TERMs, both defined on observations: TERM-014, “an equivalence class of situations relative to a chosen family of measurements”, and TERM-042, “a context-indexed system of empirically admissible local assignments or distributions”. CLAIM-112 says what kind of claim this was: “CLAIM-046 defines fidelity on observations. This says that is a choice of what to measure, not a theory of what meaning is.”
The realist stance. CLAIM-139’s ontological clause is a theory of what identity is: “A communicative kind’s identity is grounded in its relational organization rather than in any expression or encoding”. Its unit, TERM-040, is “Not an observational class (TERM-014)”, and TERM-040 quotes A218 Ch7: “A structural kind may be real while remaining indistinguishable under an insufficient family of empirical probes.”
The two stances disagree on a case. Take two realizations that agree on every probe in the family used. On TERM-014 they are one communicative object, since that is what the equivalence class is. On TERM-040 they may be two kinds. The bearer of identity has moved from the observational profile to something the profile may fail to separate.
The change is recorded and not argued. TERM-014’s “Where it went”: “The equivalence class stops being the identity criterion and becomes a limit on knowing a kind (TERM-040). No turn addresses this entry.” CLAIM-142 names it in one sentence: “It does not withdraw CLAIM-046’s methodological rule. Evidence still comes from observable responses. What changes is what that evidence is of.” That sentence keeps CLAIM-046 as a rule of method and says the evidence is now of a kind. It does not argue for the kind. The owner’s turns over the change asked for the argument to be laid out (U56), tied together (U59) and turned into a proposal (U60) (CLAIM-139’s summary).
CLAIM-112’s distinction makes the gap exact. The operational account was a choice of what to measure. CLAIM-139 adds a theory of what is measured, and the exchange concedes that the data will not choose between it and its rival. CLAIM-139 quotes A214 §13: “A traditional ontology of intrinsically individuated objects plus relational properties might reproduce the same statistical predictions.”
Both stances stand. CLAIM-038 has been Active since 2026-10-29, CLAIM-046 has been Active since 2026-10-27, CLAIM-112 is Active, CLAIM-139 is Proposed, and TERM-014, TERM-042 and TERM-040 are all Active. No claim says which bearer the line now holds, and CLAIM-115, the manuscript’s thesis, uses no TERM for it.
What it does not say
It does not say the realist reading is wrong, nor that the two stances cannot be reconciled. CLAIM-142’s reading, method kept and object changed, is one coherent reconciliation. It says the change from one bearer to the other happened between A203 and A218 without an argument, as CLAIM-140 says of the receiver, and that the record keeps both without saying which is the line’s.
Note of 2026-10-27: the edge says what the claim uses
The status review of this date (ADR-057, ADR-058) changed rests_on: CLAIM-038 to complements. The claim compares texts, and needs only that the operational stance was stated. CLAIM-046, on which the stance’s first half rests, is Active since 2026-10-27.
Note of 2026-10-28: moved to ARG-029
This claim’s verdict, that no turn argues the change from an observational class to a kind, is about support, so it moved to ARG-029, from CLAIM-046, CLAIM-112 and CLAIM-142 to CLAIM-139, form abduction, Proposed. Its comparison with CLAIM-038 and its use of TERM-014, TERM-040 and TERM-042 are in that argument’s body. The text above is unchanged.
