Context

The worklist of ADR-057 counted an Active ARG resting on a Proposed claim as a credence inversion, which treats an ARG’s status as a CLAIM’s. Two cases did not fit.

  • ARG-008 is Active and rests on CLAIM-029, Proposed. Its body says “Active: the inference holds as stated, to a testing ground”.
  • CLAIM-438 was Active only because it was conceded: ADR-032’s convention, kept in the claims template, says “a conceded one went Active”. Its evidence, THEORY-893, is Proposed. The owner ruled it Proposed.

The ten ARGs show how the status is already used:

  • ARG-009 is Proposed with every premise Active. Its status cannot mean that the premises are held.
  • ARG-008 is Active over a Proposed premise. So Active cannot mean that the premises are held either.
  • ARG-003, ARG-006 and ARG-008 are Active and have Active undercutters, and every one of those undercutters is a granted limit on what the inference carries. CLAIM-032, for example, says “the Dual State supplies one structural point and nothing more”. An undercutter that is held, and that the ARG survives, narrows the inference. It does not defeat it.
  • ARG-002, ARG-004 and ARG-010 are Rejected, each undercut outright.

Decision

Status is credence in the entry’s own content, in every scheme.

  • A CLAIM asserts a proposition.
  • An ARG asserts an inference: its premises, if held, carry its conclusion as stated. undercut_by claims that are held narrow the inference, and the ARG is Rejected only when one defeats it outright.
    • Active: the inference is accepted.
    • Proposed: the inference is offered and not yet accepted.
  • Soundness is derived. An argument is sound when its inference is Active and every premise is Active. That is a fact about several entries, so it is computed and not filed (DP-3).

What follows for the checks.

  • An Active ARG on a Proposed premise is not an inversion. It is an accepted inference waiting on a premise.
  • The check that does apply is a sound ARG whose conclusion is not held. Either the conclusion should be promoted, or the inference carries less than the conclusion says, and an undercutter should say so. ARG-006 is such a case today. Its inference is Active, its one premise CLAIM-373 is Active, and its conclusion CLAIM-063 is Proposed.

A conceded counter is recorded by revising its target.

  • Conceding an objection accepts its force against the target, and the target changes. CLAIM-433 is CLAIM-438’s revision.
  • The counter’s status stays credence in the counter. Where its evidence is Proposed, so is the counter.
  • The claims template’s “a conceded one went Active” becomes “a conceded one is recorded by its target’s revision, and keeps the status its evidence gives it”.

Alternatives considered

  • An ARG’s status means its premises are held. That duplicates the premises’ own statuses, which is a projection that drifts (DP-3), and it contradicts ARG-009 and ARG-008 as filed.
  • An ARG’s status means its conclusion is believed. That duplicates the conclusion’s status, and it cannot express an accepted inference from premises the record does not yet hold. That is what an ARG is for.
  • Keep “a conceded counter goes Active”. A concession is made in one exchange, about one target. Holding the counter Active lets it ground, corroborate or undercut anything that cites it, with credence its evidence does not give. That is the spill-over the owner named.
  • A separate field for concession. The target’s revision is already the record of what was conceded. A field on the counter would be a second copy of it.

Consequences

  • Accepted by the owner on 2026-10-28 (“accept ADR-059”).
  • The worklist no longer counts an ARG’s premises as inversions. It lists sound ARGs whose conclusion is not held. An Active counter whose own evidence is not held is an ordinary credence inversion on a CLAIM, and the existing check already lists it.
  • The claims template’s convention line now reads: a conceded counter is recorded by its target’s revision, and keeps the status its evidence gives it.
  • No ARG’s status changes. ARG-008 is an accepted inference waiting on a premise, and no longer an inversion. ARG-006 is the one sound argument whose conclusion is not held, and it goes to the next status review.
