Key takeaways

  • Contextuality, with non-locality as a special case, is exactly the non-existence of a global section of a presheaf of distributions over a measurement cover, which gives a Hilbert-space-free, linear-algebraic and hierarchical treatment of Bell, Hardy and GHZ-type arguments.

Seeded from the abstract and a skim, before the reading in NOTE-016. What follows is what the work says about itself.

The paper uses sheaf theory to treat non-locality and contextuality in one framework that generalizes Bell-type probability tables to arbitrary measurement covers, including Kochen-Specker configurations. Contextuality corresponds exactly to obstructions to global sections, and a linear-algebraic method computes these obstructions. It establishes a strict hierarchy of no-go strength with Bell < Hardy < GHZ, and shows that local hidden-variable models with negative probabilities exist exactly for no-signalling models. It characterizes maximal/strong contextuality qualitatively, as no global section in the support, gives a combinatorial generalization of Kochen-Specker parity proofs, and strengthens no-signalling to arbitrary families of commuting observables in quantum mechanics.

Standing in the record

Filed by the reading-time triage of 2026-09-25: 645 seconds of active reading over 5 sessions in the papers-feed tracker. It was filed Deferred, unread. NOTE-016 is the close reading of 2026-09-25, and it placed the work: Active — the founding paper of the sheaf-theoretic approach to contextuality. It is short, fully proved and still the standard reference for its definitions (empirical model, strong contextuality, the global-section criterion). Later work (cohomology, the contextual fraction, the CbD comparison) extends it but does not replace it.

The reading of NOTE-016 corrected the seed on one point: this paper is not a bridge to the machine-learning work. Belfiore & Bennequin (ANTH-LIT-698) cite it once, in a related-work list on p. 4, and use nothing from it; the two sheaf-neural-network papers checked (Hansen & Gebhart 2020, Bodnar et al. 2022) do not cite it at all — their lineage is cellular sheaves and sheaf Laplacians. The seed’s priority and checks are kept below as they were written.

When seeded, before the reading in NOTE-016, the entry gave a priority for a deeper reading: high — highly cited and foundational, it is the bridge between the quantum cluster and the topos/sheaf ML item (69); the skim gives the architecture, but the core theorems are short enough to read in full.

What the seeding asked a deeper reading to check (NOTE-016 is that reading):

  • Foundational for the “contextuality as local consistency without global consistency” view that later work (cohomology of contextuality, the contextual fraction) builds on. Check the precise statement of the negative-probability ↔ no-signalling theorem (§5.4) and the hierarchy proofs.
  • Note that its notion of contextuality (Kochen-Specker / sheaf) is different from Spekkens’ generalized noncontextuality in items 14, 17 and 71. A deeper read should keep the two apart.
  • ML link (real but indirect): item 69 cites this paper, and sheaf-theoretic “local-to-global” consistency underlies sheaf neural networks and related data-fusion work. The link is conceptual; this paper contains no ML.

Access when seeded: The arXiv version (1102.0264, posted Feb 2011, “extensively revised” and noted as published in NJP) was found and its abs page and full PDF (33 pp.) retrieved; read outline, §1 Introduction and §10 Postlude. Journal DOI, volume and article number confirmed via Crossref (published 2011-11-28); the iopscience page itself was not fetched. published uses the arXiv posting month.
